1.0 out of 5 stars Muffled Telarc (Telarc hooded sound) 17 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
What a pronounced disappointment this one is... One would have expected a Telarc recording to touch the senses but this one does not cut it. The sound is muffled, hooded, unclear, devoid of true dynamics, no see-through, no feel of an acoustic envelope. The reading and interpretation would make you think you are listening to an up-scaled Mozart mix...No true collision of themes, no tension in the reading: this conductor is not a Karajan, nor a Solti, nor a Furtwangler, the conductor's way with the orchestra is better suited to the cheap East-European underpaid small orchestra and so is the sonic captured here on this recording. I am not comparing this one with the top of the top, but for an example, if you get a Naxos CD with Bela Drahos conducting (Naxos 8553478) you be much better off and at a fraction of the price and a much better DDD recording: clearer dynamic, (drums for an example are much better present and resembles the real thing compared with those on the Telarc). With the Naxos recording you can reach out and touch the various orchestra groups; so much better it is then this muffled Telarc. To sum it all up: This Telarc is a clear disappointment - avoid it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Cleveland Orchestra performances - GREAT price 22 April 2011
By Kelvin Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This Everybody's Beethoven set has Christopher Dohnanyi conducting the Cleveland Symphony. You get the Fourth, Eighth, and Ninth Beethoven symphonies performed by one of America's top 10 orchestras with that magnificent Telarc sound. The recordings on this set are taken from Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies (Complete). Seventy plus bucks for the entire set. The performance takes a more period flavor, but the sonics can't be beat.

Everyone has their opinion of which conductor and ensemble did the best cycle of Beethoven symphonies. There are the standards, like the vintage edition with Bruno Walter with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies or the 1970's recordings of Georg Solti conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Beethoven: The Nine Symphonies (Complete). Some listener's would tell you Herbert von Karajan's cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic Beethoven: 9 Symphonies / Karajan (1963)is the gold standard. They are all great choices, and each has their strong points. Solti's Ninth Symphony, 1970's version, is one of the best pieces or recorded classical music, period.

You won't find these performances mentioned in the Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music. In fact, you won't find mentions of hardly anything in the Telarc catalog. Pity. Because Telarc consistently has turned out some of the finest digital recordings available on the market. Whether these Beethoven recordings are your only set, or additions to your existing Beethoven collection, solid interpretations and solid performances.
