Amazon.co.uk Review

In the world of the miserable singer-songwriter, Texas' Jeff Klein is a rare and admirable man. Although undeniably depressed, the lonesome small town country and ragged rock of Everybody Loves a Winner adhere doggedly to the theory that no matter how bad things are, they could always be worse. Coupled with dusty back porch melodies, such tragic--and by the sound of his crumbled relationships and impending mental collapse--unfounded optimism, turns dead beat ballads like "I'm Sorry Sweet Emily" and "Goodbye" into heartbreaking tales from a world weary troubadour. "Everything Is Alright" may not be the typical lullaby with lines like "This old house is burning down in a blaze of gasoline / you've been writing out your suicide notes since you were thirteen" but in the comatose vocals and tinkling music box innocence there is sweetness and light. Similarly, "California" dreams of seeing his love one last time, and despite the exhaustingly slow chug, the suggestion is he'll probably make it, meanwhile the bleary-eyed stomp of "Another Breakdown" practically taunts his demons, with a "give it your best shot" sneer. Like an against the odds road movie, Everyone Loves a Winner tells the story of one man against the world, who's just about holding his own. And while he certainly isn't the winner in the title, there's no shortage of things to love. --Dan Gennoe

Well, at least mine anyway. I bought this record because of all the hype surrounding it. I figured there was no way it would live up to my expectations. I was pleasantly proved wrong. This is one of the saddest yet inspiring pieces of work i have heard since Jeff Buckley. His voice just crawls beneath your skin and his words feel like you are reading his journals. Even the louder songs are touching. Anyone who enjoys Wilco or Tom Waits or Nick Drake will love this record!

Another week and I discover another American miserablist songwriter. Unlike some others of his kind however Jeff Klein deserves your immediate attention. This is a top-notch effort, dominated by Klein's rasp of a voice and a seriously depressed world-view.

Most of the songs are slow/medium tempo and several have very sparse musical accompaniment. The only uptempo number, 'Another Breakdown',still cannot be called 'upbeat'- Klein wishes that "they'd come and put me away".His voice is at its most Tom Waits-ish on this track. The opener,'Everything Is Alright' sets the tone for the rest of the album - Klein sings about a partner who's "been writing out your suicide note since you were thirteen" while Patty Griffin's backing vocals are gorgeous. The beauty of the song however does not make me believe Klein when he tells me that "everything is alright".This uneasy feeling is confirmed in the next song,'California',with its crunching guitar chords and cymbal-heavy percussion. This is not a joyous ode to the West coast of the USA but a meditation on what the singer will do when he returns home to the woman he doesn't love as much as he did the night before.Brian Standefer's cello is introduced on this track and goes on to play a major role in the overall feel of melancholy prevalent on the album.

'I'm Sorry Sweet Emily' is a bright and breezy pop ditty which wouldn't be out of place at the top of the singles chart.Er,actually it isn't.It's Klein's apology to the titular woman because he knows he can't be faithful to her.J J Johnson plays a march on the snare drum as Klein marches to the tune played by his insistent libido(he "can't resist the swaying of their hips").Klein alludes again to his infidelity during the epic 'Steady Wins' - seven minutes of throbbing,headache-inducing bass drum and squalls of angry electric guitar which builds to an almost unlistenable climax.

I'll not give a track-by-track breakdown, mainly because I haven't the musical expertise to do it justice. This is an exceptional album characterised by moments of startling beauty and rasping anger.

Heart felt music which since I brought hasn't come out of my CD player. Simply put, Jeff Klein is a underrated genius. I saw him at a place called sugarmill and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been. The entire club was silent for him and his mix of country and rock music. A must buy for anyone who appriciates the likes of Ryan Adams and Damien Rice and anyone who just appriciates good music.
