The Bees talk about their album Every Step's a Yes

Biography

“It’s like starting all over again,” says The Bees’ songwriter (and guitarist and bass-player) Aaron Fletcher. “Only now we’ve got loads of fans and people who love us. And our own studio.”

The Bees (known in the US as A Band Of Bees) are in a very good place, the best they’ve ever been in. Their new album Every Step’s A Yes– ... Read more in Amazon's The Bees Store

Product Description

BBC Review

The Bees are quite an odd band. Not in any self-conscious or grating fashion, but in the way their music is barely acquainted with modernity yet always seems to sound fresh. From the opener on Every Step’s a Yes, lead single I Really Need Love, it's impossible to feel any anger or resentment towards this fourth album from the Isle of Wight crew.

After all, "Don’t you just love it when you open your window in spring / don’t you know you love it when the sunshine falls in," is a superb couplet that wouldn't sound out of place on Love's Forever Changes. The music that accompanies the lines is just as heart-warming. Speedy acoustic strumming, Paul Butler's joyous croon: it's enough to make listeners think the UK had a proper summer this year.

Winter Rose is entirely different. Trumpet-inflected reggae crossed with more than a hint of clanging underwater dub? Great stuff. Third song in and there's another change in tack. This time Fleet Foxes are invoked, albeit by way of Simon & Garfunkel. Things get just as wistful for Tired of Loving, which recalls the unfussy melodic wonder of Turin Brakes’ underrated Jackinabox album. Meanwhile, there's some zither-heavy fun with Pressure Make Me Lazy and a scuzzy but loveable closer in Gaia which recalls the band's own breakout cover of Os Mutantes' A Minha Menina.

The cumulative effect of hearing this album reinforces its makers’ songwriting ability (previously cemented on three excellent LPs, particularly 2007's Octopus), but also suggests a new peer group of bands. In 2010 Best Coast, Beach House and Wild Nothing have released beautiful collections made for the emotional and physical wilderness, but which also work as perfect listening for city living. Every Step’s a Yes is a worthy partner to those band's records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Song's A Yes 12 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
Having been a fan of The Bees since just before the release of their last album Octopus, and owning every album so far, I have been anticipating this release for many months. Why The Bees are not more popular is beyond me.

The Bees sound has evolved from the garden shed album 'Sunshine Hit Me' with every album release, while still managing to retain the excellent genre blurring multi instrument sound that we all love. You can find the usual reggae, dubby, folk, psychedelia genre spanning sounds all soulfully tied together by Paul Butler's vocals.

'I Really Need Love' is an instant classic, and may have even surpassed 'Wash In The Rain' as my favourite Bees song, proof that the Bees are getting better and better.

As with the light hearted 'Chicken Payback' (Free the Bees), and 'End of the Street' (Octopus), The last track Gaia showcases their experimental side and love of creating original non conforming music.

Lets hope this album brings The Bees more recognition and is not destined for more advertisement backing music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Slow Burner 22 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
When I first played this all I heard were a collection of pretty, laid back tunes that were indistinguishable from each other. Lots of the songs seemed very generic and didn't seem to offer me anything new/exciting or immediate. Most poeple reading this will own their other albums and this one contains less of a 60s pop (these are the ghosts) type of song and none of the CHicken Payback variety.
However, after a few listens it's a winner, in fact every step's a yes (see what I did there?). This is an album that rewards with more listens, the songs are growers and I will definitely still be playing this in a few years, just as I will 'Sunshine' and 'Free The..' (but less so Octopus).
If you enjoyed the first two but thought Octopus was a slight let down, get this. But give it a few plays to warm up.
