This has been my steadfast companion on many visits to the Holy Land. In fact, this is my 3rd copy as the previous 2 were given by fellow travellers and then replaced.

Small enough to fit into a reasonable sized pocket (cargo pants or the like) this guide has all the information you need about the various sites in the Holy Land with a particularly good chapter on Jerusalem.

The addition of photographs in this latest addition is a real bonus and, whilst opening times change more regularly than the book is reprinted, most of the information was still correct.

My only gripe was that the Bible translation used to give theological context to the various sites would not be my first choice (a small passage is printed for each site) but that is purely a matter of personal taste.

If you are thinking of visiting the Holy Land then this little gem is the perfect travelling companion.

We have just returned from 2 weeks independently touring Israel and took the usual guidebooks (LP and DK). This book proved invaluable in showing how to get to sites, and exactly where they were and the history behind them. At times this was the only book we took out with us. I am not religious and my husband is agnostic but I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone. It does have extracts from Bible to put the sites into context and you can make of these what you will. It is an excellent size to carry around and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Israel.

I bought this book as I am about to go on Pilgrimage and wanted some background information. Having read through the book I think it is excellent. It gives useful general information on visiting the Holy Land, as well as detailed directions and background to the sites - even tells you if there are toilets, souvenir shops and whether tips are expected etc.
The colour photos are poor but otherwise it is a must have. This book would be particularly useful if you were visiting the sites on your own.

This is a highly recommended guide printed in a slightly smaller size than your average paperback which makes it highly portable. It is aimed primarily at an older audience (For example - temperatures are only given in Fahrenheit) but it is still very relevant to people of all ages. I would agree with other reviewers' positive comments and would add that there is a handy index at the back which lists applicable Bible references for each site mentioned. I've given the guide 4 stars rather than 5 as the description didn't indicate that there is no substantial comment on Old Testament sites which I felt was a significant omission. In addition, sites outside Israel (such as Bethany-Beyond the Jordan which is recognised as the location of Jesus' baptism) are not covered either. Other than these omissions, it is highly informative and thoroughly recommended.

This is a wonderful little book, and was particularly helpful when walking around the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Well worth buying, but read it properly before you go, as it points you in the direction of some gems some other guides may not.

Great book!

This was about all that was on offer and it proved a disappointment. Being used to Western European mapping like Michelin and AA Road Maps, this fell way short of an acceptable standard. It is OK as a very broad reference to where you might be and general direction on road travel, but useless for any detail.
