Set in Liverpool during WW2, this is a story about two young Irish women making a life for themselves in England. The first half of the book is very slow, hence only three stars, but the pace does pick up in the second part. Andrews writing on the war is vivid and remarkably realistic and the journey of the two main characters has an emotional truth and authenticity about it which I found very moving. I have only read two other books by this author and she is a very good writer, but I didn't find this book engrossing, although it is a believable and heartfelt story in the end.
