I really enjoyed the first series of this DVD, especially having read Death Zone by Dickinson at the same time. The build-up to Everest, the way Brice runs his operation, the characters who are attempting the feat, were all explored and followed at a nice pace. I got a good feel for what it's like to attempt Everest that books hadn't captured for me before. The last episode was especially touching with the death of a climber from another expedition and how Brice's team tried to deal with it.

The second series seemed more rushed and focused too much on Big Tim, who, incredibly, Brice let back into the team the next year. I thought the narration was more muddy on this series, and I would have liked a broader look at the other climbers. In fact, Mogens Jensen, who was so well documented in Series 1, is only a side-bar at the beginning of Season 2, and I thought that was a shame.

Very enyoyable 21 April 2010

I watched these series with a gap of about 2 years between series 1 and 2. My impression was that series 1 was more interesting as there was a greater variety of charathers whereas series 2 was overshadowed by the amusing Tim, whose ego was as big as his frame. The scenery is really lovely but there are annoying features, namely the obsessive Machismo, the personifcation by the charachters of the mountain and the frequent recapitulations which must have preceded and followed commercial breaks. Even so, it is all very enjoyable and one really wants to know who will summit. Clearly these guys have extrordinary self-discipline in this context but I wondered to myself whether this self-discipline was reflected in other parts of their lives. As the Dane rightly put it, his bigger challenge was his forthcoming marriage and in that he was spot on. Climbimg everest is about a dialogue with oneslef - there is something more majestic about making a sucess out of a marriage where the dialogue is with another person rather than with myself battling a mountain!

This is a brilliant box set. Both series follow the same agenda, that is Russel Brice's expedition of paying clients trying to reach the summit of mt Everest.
The footage is really great, especially the sherpa cams, they give a great idea of what its really like up their. (i'm guessing as i've never acctually been up there myself).
I felt genuine excitment as the climbers all struggled to make it to the top and ultimately achieve their dreams.
If there's anything else as good as this on dvd available, a will definately be buying it.
