4.0 out of 5 stars Usefulness of Everest Base Camp Map, 11 Nov 2009
By Ambler (Lymm Cheshire) - See all my reviews
Having very recently returned from Nepal, my review looks at how the map related to my use of it. I was on an expedition incolving climbing 3 'trekking' peaks: Pokalde, Island Peak and Lobuche East. The map was not intended as anything more than a view of the topography, location of peaks, camps , villages and trails. It served this purpose fairly well but there are limitaions. Names vary in spelling and local pronunciation, eg endings of che and je, which are interchangeable. Some peaks have different names, eg Taweche, not Taboche ; Cholate, not Cholatse: Gokyo Ri, not just Gokyo, which is the village. Some lodge locations may be named differently, eg Thangna (or Thangnan) instead of Dragnag. The Ambulapcha La may be written or pronounced as Amphulapcha La. Base camp and high camp locations may be different from symbol locations. The Island Peak base camp extends over a bigger area and altitiude difference. Some details may be missing, eg ridges that must be crossed or ascended en route, small lake at Lobuche East high camp. Altitudes may not be accurate (but one must be aware of the variations due to altimeter settings). I haven't compared different maps of the Everest region but I'm guessing that each map has its limitations and should be used cautiously.
