More About the Author

What were your motivations for writing the book?

In my experience, there is a general lack of understanding about Diversity, Inclusion & Equality - there are policies but insufficient evidence to demonstrate appropriate behaviours and understanding about similarity and differences. The focus is often on racism and sexism; there is confusion about religion and culture and in some public sectors a fear about saying or doing the wrong thing, as well as lots of collusion in the private and public sectors with inappropriate behaviour.

I have designed and delivered courses on Diversity, Inclusion and Equality for over 20 years and with the recent Equality Act 2010 (which brings together over 200 pieces of equalities legislation) this seemed a good opportunity to provide clarity about each of the 9+ protected characteristics, as well as encouraging businesses to commission Muika Leadership to work with them.

Muika Leadership workshops always have a positive impact on individuals and organisations, because our approach is non-threatening, and engages individuals in a dialogue about D I E in a way that they take responsibility for their own behaviour, as well as being confident in dealing with inappropriate behaviour.

This reference book provides an opportunity for people to 'get behind the words' of the legislation, and understand that there is a moral/ethical, as well as business case for D I E, and thereby create a working environment, which has inclusive structures and systems, which are routinely reviewed, monitored and evaluated.

Mui Li is an expert in her eld who understands individuals and organisations, communicates with authority and passion and connects with people emotionally and intellectually. -- Professor Binna Kandola OBE Pearn Kandola

About the Author

Mui Li MA BA (Hons) PGCE. Born in North London to a Russian mother and Chinese father, Mui grew up experiencing difference on a very personal level. From the stories told by her parents about the Cultural Revolution, Stalin, Taoism, Confucius and the Boxer Rebellion, to the conscious and unconscious bias and ‘polite prejudice’ she experienced – where individuals felt it was okay to make inappropriate comments. The firm grounding of self-worth, instilled by her parents, and her continual personal and professional development has enabled her to be confident, thus minimising any negative effects of the discriminatory behaviour towards her. Mui is now considered to be one of the leading experts in the field of diversity, inclusion and equality, and has been involved in consultancy and training for the past 20 years. Her previous roles, as teacher, advisory teacher, curriculum leader and Education Officer, Director of Mui Li Associates, and now co-founder of Muika Leadership, have led her to become one of the most respected and sought-after speakers on this subject. She has worked extensively with different organisations from the private and public sectors, and is proud to say that the impact of her interventions is always exceptionally positive, leaving the participants/organisations enlightened, enriched, and motivated to bring about change.
