Review

"pure magic... An epistolary classic." --Robert Gwyn Palmer, THE RESIDENT

"illuminating" --THE LIST (SCOTLAND)

Review

"his letters seem special and intimate, almost like a private language. Writing, like acting, works by illusion. But the pleasure they give is not illusory, and on that score Ever, Dirk is a cornucopia." (JOHN CAREY THE SUNDAY TIMES )

"Bogarde's gifted biographer the delight of this book is Coldstream's deft and intelligent editing the perfect book to while away a summer afternoon." (PHILIP HOARE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH )

"reveals both his waspish gossipy side as well as his tender one" (KIRSTY LAING FRONT ROW, BBC RADIO 4 )

"The Whip is enjoying the new book of letters from the late actor Dirk Bogarde... waspish." (THE SUN )

"fascinating... meticulously edited..." (BRYAN FORBES THE SPECTATOR )

"notable for their poetic charm, cantankerous, bitchy honesty and their author's total inability to spell or use conventional syntax." (TIME OUT )

"enormous and inexhaustibly fascinating... The book's other hero is John Coldstream... so pleasurable." (DAILY EXPRESS )

'What an egregious conundrum Dirk Bogarde was. This collection remarkably reveals a fascinating, original and in some ways haunted man in shockingly unmediated form', (SIMON CALLLOW THE GUARDIAN )

"at his best... his letters are engaging and informative... Bogarde has been beautifully served by Coldstream." (LYNN BARBER THE DAILY TELEGRAPH )

"a funny, petulant and wildly entertaining selection." ("YOU MUST REALLY READ" COLUMN SUNDAY TIMES )

"John Coldstream, the editor of Ever, Dirk, sees the book as completing a "quartet" in different media, made up of an Arena documentary first broadcast in 2001, Coldstream's authorised biography and an archival website." (ADAM MARS-JONES THE OBSERVER )

"filled with zest for life" (CHRISTOPHER FOWLER INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY )

"the letters of a lucky man... This is all very endearing - or as he would put it, indearing." (PETER LEWIS THE DAILY MAIL )

"The letters of Sir Dirk Bogarde - acerbic, witty, mournful, misspelled - arrive in a volume big enough to stop a bullet or stun a rhinoceros...Readers of EVER DIRK can expect to laugh, sigh, and from time to time, recoil in outrage." (THE IRISH TIMES )

"Might it be premature to state this will be my Book Of the Year?" (Roger Lewis MAIL ON SUNDAY )

"The editing is exemplary, with just enough well-placed notes and linking paragraphs to guide us smoothly through this parabola of Bogarde's later life... magnificently produced." (THE STAGE )

"meticulously edited by the faithful Coldstream" (SUNDAY HERALD )

"pure magic... An epistolary classic." (Robert Gwyn Palmer THE RESIDENT )

"illuminating" (THE LIST (SCOTLAND) )

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable, 6 Sep 2008
By N. Cawsey (Bristol, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At first glance I thought this was going to be a difficult book to read, mainly due to the author's idiosyncratic spelling and grammar as well as the plethora of foot notes necessary because of the constant use of nick names, initials as well as, at times, private shorthand - but it really wasn't a problem. The spelling was simply phonetic and the punctuation etc. was immaterial - and the little footnotes became quite enjoyable!
This is (probably) a book enjoyed by the more mature, those who can remember the names dropped - Guilgud,Montand,Signoret,Coward - those who lived in a time when being gay was being happy. If you have read Dirk Bogardes several volumes of autobiography it is even more fascinating as this book reveals the proper names of people that were heavily disguised!
A man who was a compulsive letter writer;these letters show great happiness (his life in France), despair (after his eternity ended with the illness of Tony Forwood) and always so much love ( for the recipient).
Thanks as well to John Coldstream for the editing - he has weeded out the grain from the chaff I'm sure.
Perhaps 6 stars if I could.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another snapshot of an admired writer and actor, 29 Jan 2009
By P. BERRY (Sussex, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Bogarde Letters are an additional perspective on John Coldstream's excellent life and cover interesting letters not shared before. They illustrate Bogarde's love of writing and his narrative and descriptive skill, and are often moving and amusing. His honesty, truculence and perceptions are there and the agony of his loneliness after the death of Forward and his appreciation and pride in his books as they dominate the best sellar lists. A must for fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating complex man!, 22 Feb 2009
By Mary Vallely (Armagh, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Reading in stages because I don't want it to end. Bogarde was a fascinating complex man, capable of great love and compassion but also wickedly waspish at times. He also comes across as quite "camp" in his letters. The veil is still drawn across his sexuality, of course. The old devil was very astute and careful to protect his image. A great read especially for those of us who followed his screen career and read all his books. Strongly recommended!
