5.0 out of 5 stars Hits the spot, 6 Mar 2008
Just voted best rock guitarist of all time in a major internet poll, Toto lead man Steve Lukather's 4th solo rock album is definitely his most commercially appealing to date.

For the first time since his 1989 debut album 'Lukather', he completely leaves behind his penchant for jazz fusion and has produced a full on rock album which focusses on beat driven melodies interspersed with a few of his trade mark ballads. However, don't be misled. This is no run of the mill AOR offering. Just when you think it is going to be predictable, it offers a few offbeat moments without making it too challenging a listen.

To anyone familiar with his work, it goes without saying that his guitar work is the caviar of its genre. However, the real bonus is the production of his vocals which comes close to reproducing the earthy, soul like feel of his live performances.

On first listen there are standout tracks but by the fourth listen I find it hard to pick out a favourite. If push came to shove, I would nominate 'Stab In The Back' which Lukather wrote as a tribute to the style of his heroes Steely Dan. Whilst it is Steely Dan in style, the song is an original piece of work with some heavy guitar flourishes which stamp Lukather's own mark on it. The title track is the first single to be taken off the album and understandably so - it is a full on catchy rocker. The offbeat prize goes to 'Jammin with Jesus' which mixes funky rock verses with gospel style choruses and is perhaps my next favourite after 'Stab'.

Initially, I was a bit disappointed that the album closed with a meandering type instrumental rather than a more memorable moment. However, whilst I now have decided I really do like this track, it would probably have been better used as a mid album interlude as a bridge between a rock track and a ballad. In the scheme of things this is a small irritation on what is a really classy rock album.
