Product Description

Fronted by talented songwriter Billy Franks and his lifelong friend from Fulham Court, Lee Hirons, the Faith Brothers were one of the most hotly-tipped bands of 1985. Their impassioned brand of blue- eyed soul attracted comparisons with The Style Council and the Spencer Davis Group while their socialist views linked them in the media with the likes of Billy Bragg and the Redskins. Eventide was the Faith Brothers debut album, issued on Siren Records in 1985. It reached the Top 75 and included the singles Eventide and Whistling In The Dark but omitted by their popular radio hits from earlier that year, Country Of The Blind and A Stranger On Home Ground . Amazingly, Eventide has never before been issued on CD! The Faith brothers were championed by Jamming! s editor Tony Fletcher, who eventually became their manager. Now a successful author (Keith Moon, The Smiths, REM), Tony has written a heartfelt foreword for this long-overdue reissue. Compiled with the help of Billy and Lee (and remastered with TLC by Lee), this 2-CD expanded edition boasts re-mastered music as well as a splendid, annotated booklet boasting rare photos and extracts from Billy s hilarious yet touching autobiography A Far Cry From Sunset.

Others will articulate more profoundly just how great this album is.

Rather than just repeat the obvious (it's fantastic and you really need to buy it), I'll make myself useful by listing the origin of the tracks on CD2, as these are not always completely clear from the sleeve notes.

1 - The Country of the Blind - Single Version
2 - A Stranger on Home Ground - Single Version
3 - The Tradesman's Entrance - Pre-Siren Single A-Side
4 - Newtown (The Promise of Albion) - Jamming Magazine Flexi-Disc Studio Version
5 - Eventide - 7" Version (Full Band Version) - from The Country of the Blind single *
6 - Thrill of the Kill - Country of the Blind b-Side, NOT the b-side to the pre-Siren Tradesman's Entrance (as is implicit in the sleeve notes)
7 - Fulham Court - b-side to A Stranger on Home Ground
8 - Easter Parade - bonus track from the 12" and 7" double single pack of The Country of the Blind
9 - Union Jack Robinson - Eventide (A Hymn for Change) 12" b-side
10 - Eventide (Recital) - from The Country of the Blind single *
11 - Whistling in the Dark - Originally called the `Laughter in the Trenches Mix' - 12" A-Side
12 - Biko/The Flames Are Catching Now - b-side & 12" b-side to Eventide (A Hymn For Change) - This is the studio version.
13 - The Country of the Blind (Live at Guilford 22nd May 1985) - bonus track on 12" of A Stranger on Home Ground
14 - Newtown (The Promise of Albion) - (Live at Guilford 22nd May 1985) - bonus track on 10" of A Stranger on Home Ground
15 - Eventide - (Live at Guilford 22nd May 1985) - bonus track on 10" of A Stranger on Home Ground

* Memory fails me as to exactly where these tracks originate. Both are from the single releases of The Country of the Blind.

My old tape of this album went the way of all old tapes years ago. So I was pleased to see this on here. I not one for nostalgia. I don't think I have more than 5 CD's of music from the 80's (if that!) (The Lover Speaks. may be the only other (look it up)) but there is something about the guys voice that just captures the "80's". Not that I particularly what to do that, but anyhow. Good songs. Good lyrics. Good voice.

How long have I been waiting for this to come out? A pretty long time, I'll tell you that. I can now throw away my distorted tape and listen to one of the best, although comparatively unknown, albums of the 80s.

Dealing with recession, industrial unrest and the Falklands, Eventide forms part of the great British tradition of the culturisation of popular protest through the arts. Historically, time of turmoil, and for those of you who weren't around the early to mid 80s were a turbulent era with Britain's political elite blurring the lines between the good of the people and the power of the party, with the police taking Thatcher's shilling to impose political will over civil dissent, produces powerful music. Unfortunately, this has not happened to today and despite the predicament we find ourselves in we can still take solace in Simon Cowell's latest pop pap offering.

This album brings back great memories of a simpler time, a time when we made things. I suggest you put it on, buy yourself the Young Ones box set and a crate of Harp and let yourself be transported back to the 80s. Feel what it was like before it all became processed and marketed.

I have the original of this album on cassette and it is brilliant to now have it on CD. The bonus CD contains a couple of tracks I had never heard before plus different versions of old favourites.

Fantastic to hear this great album again as my audio tape gave up many years ago. Pleased to purchase the CD addition with the mp3 download, So I can listen to it wherever I am. Would make my day to hear of the band touring again as I saw them a few times in the mid eighties and their live set was fantastic.

Classic mid 80's melodic sing along anthemic tunes. The Brothers never got the recognition they deserved. The tradesman entrance can be wheeled out everytime a recession hits, it is so true to the point. great lyrical content to accompany the drum, bass, guitar and brass sections. The bonus cd covers the lost singles and b-sides.
