From Amazon.co.uk

Drawing from Andrei Tarkovsky's heady science fiction meditation Solaris by way of Alien and Hellraiser, this visually splendid but pulpy piece of science fiction schlock concerns a mission in the year 2047 to investigate the experimental American spaceship Event Horizon, which disappeared seven years previously and suddenly, out of nowhere, reappeared in the orbit of Neptune. Laurence Fishburne stars as mission commander Captain Miller and Sam Neill is Dr Weir, the scientist who designed the mystery ship. Miller's T-shirt-and army-green-clad crew of smart-talking pros finds a ship dead and deserted, but further investigations turn up blood, corpses, dismembered body parts, and a decidedly unearthly presence. It turns out that the ship is really a space-age haunted house where spooky (and obviously impossible) visions lure each of the crew members into situations they should know better than to enter. The ship is gorgeously designed, borrowing from the dark, organic look of Alien and adding the menacing touch of teeth sprouting from bulwark doors and clawlike spikes inexplicably shooting out of the engine room floor. Unfortunately the film is not nearly as inventive as the production design--it turns into a woefully inconsistent psychic monster movie that sacrifices mood for tepid shocks--but the special effects are topnotch, and ultimately the movie has a trashy B movie charm about it. --Sean Axmaker

Synopsis

In this eerie science-fiction ghost story, an astrophysicist (Sam Neill), haunted by the memory of his wife's suicide, joins a rescue mission to salvage his life's work: the Event Horizon, a prototype spacecraft capable of faster-than-light travel that has been missing for seven years. Their arrival triggers contact with something beyond human experience--and more dangerous than ever imaginable. Similar in plot to Andrei Tarkovsky's eponymous screen adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's science-fiction novel Solaris, Event Horizon provides some truly potent moments in its often potent combination of horror and sci-fi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scare the pants off you! 4 Sep 2011
Format:DVD
I saw this film about 10 years ago for the first time and I remember thinking it was on a par with Alien and Aliens for pure science fiction horror. Although my wife disagrees (declaring it a stupid film) I think is one of the scariest films I have ever seen. A massive fan of science fiction horror, I found it gripping throughout with very original scenes and special effects. Watching it more recently, despite the fact it was made in 1997, I think it is standing the test of time and doesn't - yet - come across as dated. I am not a big Sam Neill fan but he is good in this film, however it is the quality of Laurance Fishburne's acting that ensures that this film maintains a strong performance throughout. I do not tire of watching this - particularly late at night with the lights out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hell of a concept 22 Feb 2003
Format:DVD
I am surprised at the harsh criticsm that this film has come in for here, and in other forums. It has been consigned by some to the stalk and slash section of the DVD rental shelves, while others dismiss it as second hand sci-fi. Personally I really enjoyed it. The blend of suspense, mystery, horror and gore is supplemented well by strong performances by Laurence Fishbourne and Sam Neill. Sure, some of the death scenes and other set pieces are a little hackneyed, but this is more than compensated for by that rarity amongst films - an original (and if you actually sit down and think about it, quite challenging)concept. On an intellectual level this questions our pursuit of knowledge (in this case technology) and asks us if we are fully prepared for what it could reveal. Top stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hell of a film 10 Dec 2008
Format:DVD
I'm an Alien film fan, I enjoy a deep space claustrophobic scientific scare. Event Horizon is one of only a few films that has genuinely gave me a chilling unsettling fright and uneasy dreams - its Hellraiser (or Hellraiser as it should have been) in space. Wonderful horror concept, suspenseful, great characters, wonderful atmospheric detail. Great sci-fi movie, great horror movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably the scariest movie I've ever seen 15 Sep 2011
Format:DVD
From what I remember this is a great film..I say from what I remember as I've never actually had the courage to watch it again, such was the extent to which it scared me witless upon my first viewing. As I recall this film starts out as a exploratory sci-fi flic in the same vein of say '2001:A space odyssey', infact the opening 20 minutes I remember quite vividly as this is the only point of the film during which I had my eyes fully open. After that things get extremely nasty for all involved, there's something about demonic possession and the ship being the living embodiment of hell and then Sam Neil gauges out his eye sockets. If you value your sleep I personally wouldn't recommend this film but if you've seen the likes of freddy kruger/haloween/friday the 13th/scream etc and want to see something truly terrifying then Event Horizon is certainly for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gory and stylish 7 July 2006
Format:DVD
I bought this DVD after remember how much watching this film on TV terrified me. And yes, it worked the second time too. It's kind of like a better made and acted Hellraiser without the spiritual rubbish and all those cool ghost stories. It's almost like a Ghost Ship in space (not quoting the film). It is incredibly atmospheric and you'll know pretty much all of the actors in it (Sam Neill, Sean Pertwee and Jason Isaacs). The soundtrack is also excellent and adds more to the atmosphere of this surreal film.

The balance between British and American characters plus an Australian also makes this film better for me because you get a little tired of having an all American cast in big films, no matter how good they are. The acting in the film is good as a consequence in this, all of these good actors being up to their full standards. As for the storyline, well, it doesn't get any better than a ship getting sucked down a black hole and coming back with an evil entity onboard which killed its crew and is bent on killing the rescue crew too. The Event Horizon is a stunning ship and the Gravity Drive is a stunning looking device to go in its heart - it's no wonder that Dr. Weir became obsessed with it.

But this film is a good example of how obsessions can become deadly, so watch out. The dark entity starts to make its presence known and eventually takes over Dr. Weir and kills most of the crew. It involves some fantastic scenes such as Justin depressurising in the air lock and some guy on a ship log recording pulling out his entrails though his mouth. Sounds gory? Yeah, it is, but don't let that put you off even if you really need to have a strong stomach for it. The end of the film gives nothing away, maybe because they might have done a sequal.
