David Dubal got to know Horowitz a few years before the great pianist's death, and this account of evenings spent with him is very vivid and honest. Dubal seems to have total recall for conversations with the Maestro, and his account is very convincing. Horowitz comes across as a bit of a monster - utterly fickle, self-absorbed and egotistical. Dubal becomes one of his many courtiers, until eventually he can stand it no longer. Their discussions, particularly about music, are never dull. Dubal is so well informed and has so many interesting stories it is no wonder that the Horowitzes took him up. I found it a very enjoyable book. I think it would be more interesting for the general Horowitz fan eager for titbits about their hero than a serious music student looking for the keys to greatness.
