unlike almost every other book written on statistics, this one does not assume that u have a phd in math.

If u need to use stats for the first time or a refresher, this book is great. It will guide u gently through the subject while avoiding heavy maths. Nice clear explanations and an early acknowledgement in the book that stats are not everyones subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting to read 10 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as a present for someone, but I liked it so much I'm going to have to order another one for me! I actually got excited reading it because it shows you great examples of when to use different methods - and for instance, charts and graphics are covered in Chapter 2 instead of right at the back as an afterthought. I've been using statistics professionally for decades and this book is going to be a great revision course for some techniques I may have forgotten, as well as giving me useful new ways to use existing methods.

Actually I'm going to buy more than one extra copy because of all the mathematical skills, a knowledge of statistics is probably the most important one outside of simple arithmetic. I've never needed to use algebra, calculus, or trigonometry but statistics confront us every day in the media, at work, and from the mouths of politicians. If nothing else, get this book to see who's telling fibs, who doesn't really 'get it' and who is spouting, as Churchill put it, "terminological inexactitudes".

3.0 out of 5 stars So-so 19 May 2010
By Kimberly Colley - Published on Amazon.com

This book tries to break down statistics into an understandable format, but I learn best by doing. While the book has sample problems for you to work out, the answers do not come with explanations, so if you didn't get it right the first time, you have no idea where you went wrong.

2.0 out of 5 stars Memorize and take a test. 18 Dec 2011
By mlantrip - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is factual and if you can wade through it, useful. The writing has a social/political attitude, which is slightly annoying. But the problem with the book is that it starts by giving about 20 words for which you must memorize the definitions assigned to them within this specific profession or discipline, which is not the common English definition. A good editor who also knows how to write could turn this into a real gem by starting with examples and pivoting off those to an explanation of what the various elements are and how they affect each other. But I admire and respect anyone who can write a book and I applaud the author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just not a well written book 9 Mar 2013
By Helene Gray - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to buy this book for a class. It is just not well written. I am three chapters in and have found multiple formula errors. It makes studying more difficult when the example that is supposed to explain a concept is referring to another concept or doesn't work out mathematically. I use this to find out what the teacher wants for the assignments and I use another book to clarify the concepts this one is trying to explain.
