Book Description

There is no-one quite like Maya Angelou. Poet to the president, champion of the people, best-selling autobiographer, her experiences as dancer, singer, waitress, activist, director, teacher, wife and mother, have made her one of the few people truly qualified to share her lessons of a lifetime. With her customary courage and humour - and always with style and grace - she reflects on the people and places she has known. She talks about Africa and ageing, she gives us a profile of her great friend and 'daughter' Oprah Winfrey, she sings the praises of sensuality. But here too are her thoughts on the end of a much-wanted marriage, confessions of rage and the importance of solitude. EVEN THE STARS LOOK LONESOME is the work of a wonderful woman who is not afraid to admit to the mistakes and vulnerabilities that make us human.

More About the Author

Dr Maya Angelou was one of the world's most important writers and activists. Born 4 April 1928, she lived and chronicled an extraordinary life: rising from poverty, violence and racism, she became a renowned author, poet, playwright, civil rights' activist - working with Malcolm X and Martin Luther King - and memoirist. She wrote and performed a poem, 'On the Pulse of Morning', for President Clinton on his inauguration; she was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama and was honoured by more than seventy universities throughout the world.

She first thrilled the world with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). This was followed by six volumes of autobiography, the seventh and final volume, Mom & Me & Mom, published in 2013. She wrote three collections of essays; many volumes of poetry, including His Day is Done, a tribute to Nelson Mandela; and two cookbooks. She had a lifetime appointment as Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University of North Carolina. Dr Angelou died on 28 May 2014.

'A brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman' President Barack Obama

'The poems and stories she wrote . . . were gifts of wisdom and wit, courage and grace' President Bill Clinton

'She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace . . . She will always be the rainbow in my clouds' Oprah Winfrey

'She was important in so many ways. She launched African American women writing in the United States. She was generous to a fault. She had nineteen talents - used ten. And was a real original. There's no duplicate. There is no duplicate' Toni Morrison

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Amazing! Wonderful and inspirational! 16 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I am not able to finish this book just yet as it is just too good! I have to put it down and ration myself otherwise all too soon it will be over. That is always the sign of a good book. Dr. Angelou does it again in this short selection of essays and inspiration. Starting with the first page in the chapter "A House Can Hurt, a Home can Heal" and getting better and better from there, Dr. Angelou soothes the soul and the spirit. Many reading this book will say "yes that is me" or "that is so true!" The lessons it teaches are important for us all and that is why this book is well worth the read! Five Crowns many times over.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was uplifting and funny. 27 Jun. 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This was my first book of Mya's. I have heard her speaking before, and I wanted to see what her writing was like. It was brilliant. It astounds me how somebody can write with such confidence and honesty. The difference between Mya and other authors is that Mya is not afraid to admit her mistakes and the bad experiences. It was really funny. It was almost as though she was speaking herself.
