Product Description

CD Description

The Only Ones were the epitome of the so-called "cult" band. Underground luminaries, beloved by critics and rock connoisseurs, and their influence still resounds to this day. Between 1976-1981, the band produced three critically lauded albums, and their eponymous debut album in 1978 introduced the world to the timeless anthem "Another Girl, Another Planet", arguably the most perfect three minutes of pop music ever committed to tape.

I allways liked The Only Ones and bought the LP "Baby's Got A Gun" then in the early 1990's I bought "The Immortal Story" compilation CD. When I noticed there were remastered original album CDs I bought all three. I think "Even Serpents Shine" their 2nd, is their finest album originally released in 1979. Peter Perrett's songs and John Perry's guitar not forgetting Alan Mair on bass & Mike Kellie on drums create a sound that still sounds contemporary. They were one of only a few bands in that era who could actually play their instruments well unlike many of the punk bands I saw. I thoroughly recommend this album to any serious comtemporary music collector.

The second album by the Only Ones was probably their best and includes classic songs like In Betweens, Curtains for You and Miles From Nowhere. The singer, Peter Perret, writes clever lyrics and here he was at the height of his powers, exploring the darker side of human nature and love.

The Only Ones were thought of as being a bit New Wave at the time but they had no real connection with punk - far too intelligent and they could all play their instruments to a very high standard. John Perry who plays the lead guitar is a master of his craft, there is no showing off here but genuine excitement and plenty of variation.

Another Planet is not on here, but if you liked that then this collection will prove just how many brilliant songs they had. This is the band at their peak and the re-master is a genuine improvement on the original so if you've got an old vinyl copy of the album or the old CD, its time to trade up and enjoy it all over again. Oh, and you get three extra tracks as well.

in its own right it was a masterpiece that contained some good songs from the grittier "from here to eternity", "Flaming torch", "you've got to pay" and "No solution" to the mellower "In between" with Peter Perret's vocals ranging from the upbeat poetic tones to the downbeat state of sobriety which was evident of his struggles with drugs and internal problems with the band and each other that was close to derailing their progress which was eveident on their third album.
