Product Description

Eve Evans is sixteen years old and to the outside world she seems to have a perfect life. Sure, her Dad left her when she was little more than a toddler… and there was that incident that left her friend hospitalised, which even Eve has nearly forgotten. That is the part that is public knowledge. The part Eve keeps hidden is her bipolar mother who struggles to keep a roof over Eve’s head and the bailiffs knocking on the door.Something had to give somewhere along the line...

One night, at 3:15am, a fairground rolls into town. Behind the façade is a skills test booth for a school for exceptional children. A school that sits in the middle of a hidden island in the North Sea. A school that Eve finds has many dark secrets. And a vampire in the dungeon.

Eve must use her talents to survive and more importantly, she has to choose her new friends very carefully.

Expect Sequels! 25 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I agree with another reviewer that this is perhaps aimed at a slightly younger market than novels I usually read (at 31) but it certainly kept me entertained. Never written in a condescending manner and with a great deal of peril in the staging of events, the story charts the induction of a young lady into an ancient organisation whose mission is to protect humanity from the ever present threat of vampires.

It belts along at a fair pace and, while satisfying, the conclusion leaves you ready to see what will happen next (the cover does say Book 1 after all!). As a reader of many series and follower of many TV and movie series, I quite like to know that the characters and events live in a bigger world and I'm looking forward to the expansion of this one. Definitely worth a spot on your kindle!

Very Promising 10 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I wasn't expecting too much from this, being a bit weary of vampire books and indie novels in general, but the free sample hooked me in. It seems to be aimed at the teen / young adult market, but it held my interest at 35 yo. There were a lot of loose ends at the finish, but I suppose that's what sequels are for. Let's hope the next one's out soon as it ends on something of a cliff-hanger.

The main character, Eve, is believable and you are drawn into her world and struggles. This school is fraught with danger and seems like a darker, nastier Hogwarts - where Hagrid would walk around with a butcher's knife and covered in blood.

As a minor point - the vampires in this book are very different others I've read. A good twist on their origins. I'd recommend downloading the sample and seeing if it's your thing or not.

As a Father of two teenage kids I rarely get to see my Kindle these days. I read this after they had both enjoyed it and was interested to see what new take there could be on this genre. I have to say I thought this book was excellent. Despite taking on a very popular subject it feels a lot more real than other, more commercial, attempts and the kids and I both felt the characters were a lot more like people in real life. The story is compelling and well driven by the central character, Eve.

All in all a great read and I am excited to see what future work Basnett releases
