Evans RealFeel 7" Practice Pad*

I had one of these (or at least something very similar: it was definitely a 7" Real-Feel pad, but may not have been an 'Apprentice' model) for donkeys years. I lost it in the end, and have currently replaced it with a larger 12" version. The 7" was great, and one of its chief virtues was its portability: I often took it when going on holidays, so I could annoy everybody around me with my constant rudimental tap-tap-tapping ;-)

The larger one I now have sits at home in a snare basket, is double-sided (with a slightly harder black surface on underside), and doesn't travel. But the 7" was either mounted on a cymbal stand - the model I had was single-sided with a threaded hole on the underside - or would sit on my knees/legs/a cushion, or whatever. Particularly good for practising your snare/stick rudiments and technique, all that Jojo Mayer type stuff!

UPDATE: I found the 7" pad (Jan 2014), and I'm using it again... fabulous! Especially good for (as noted above) taking on your travels. One little thing I'd say about the 7" pad, and perhaps this is why it's threaded, is that, being quite light in weight, compared with the 12", it can bounce around under your practise strokes. So, for heavy-hitters and super-'shedders, either make sure you screw it to a stand, or buy the bigger heavier pad.

* As sometimes happens on Amazon, this review appears (at present; June 2014) under the listing for the 12" Evans pads as well as the 7"!

Just started drumming lessons and Evans RealFeel 12" practice pad arrived yesterday. Already had my money's worth! This is a great practice pad (much better than my previous one - yellow pages!) It's got a realistic bounce and my paradiddles are coming along very nicely! Every would-be drummer should have one!

This is a great pad to have in your drum bag and its size means you can take it with you and warm up before gigs easily. It has a screw fixture on the base so that it can be attached to stands but it is stable enough to practice on your knee or on any surface. I like the feel of the pad and it gives good rebound and a realistic feel. It is made of quality materials. Highly recommended product and seller.

The gum rubber side (grey) has a very nice feel, it gives a lot of rebound similar to that of a kit snare drum where as the black harder side has a marching snare-like feel to it. It is excellent for performing all 40 of the standard rudiments and is quite enough to be used in places such as a bedroom it creates little noise even with hard strokes. It can also be used on any surface as the reverse side acts as a grip to stop it moving, while the actual pad absorbs all hits so the surface being played on wont take any damage. Overall an excellent product I would recommend it to any drummer as an essential pad above any on the market currently.

A real good, solid and weighty product. Has the benefit of being two sided, so you are really buying two for the price of one. There are a lot of cheaper ones available but they really don't make the mark and you will regret not buying one a bit better. You'll never regret buying this. It is well built, looks good, feels good and plays just like a real drum.

This pad has a very good feel when playing. It bounces like a proper snare and enables practice of stick patterns without any noise. It is padded on the bottom so the surface underneath it is not damaged, and is built very well. The pad itself is very well stuck to the wooden backing and feels solid.

Can't fault this product for the price. Very realistic feel upon striking. Excellent. Performs just as good if not better than models costing a lot more.

On first impressions, this item doesn't look like much. However, it does offer you a brilliant alternative to having to play on a drum kit - With it's gum rubber surface it offers a realistic response (similar to a snare drum) whilst heavily reducing the amount of sound produced in comparison to a drum kit. This is definitely a brilliant little item to get your hands on if you want to practice your control and speed (Sticking technique). PLUS, it fits in a regular snare stand OR it can sit on your lap wherever you are!

There are only a few downsides to this item, these are:

- The looks - This items looks aren't the best and it's not helped by the slap dash workmanship from the use of glue on the wood to make the rubber stick to it. This is mainly noticeable around the corners of the product as there are clear dark spots where the item has been stuck down. However, this will not affect the items performance, but from EVANS we would expect to see a higher quality finish to this...

- The wood - The wood is a little rough to handle and makes the pad feel a little heavy. However, if you're going to place this onto a snare stand, this will make no difference BUT if you wish to have it on your lap it can feel a bit weighty after a while.

In the future I hope the wood gets an update so future purchases will have a higher quality feel to them!

OVERALL

Overall, I would recommend this item to any drummer who wishes to practice their rudiments, speed and control anywhere without the restriction of the kit. This item is a very good alternative to get that similar response to a snare drum.
