Review

'This excellent book combines qualitative research, cultural analysis, theological reflection and practical advice. It is a most welcome resource as we learn to communicate our faith in a changing culture.' - Graham Cray, Bishop of Maidstone

Product Description

Based on extensive research, Evangelism in a Spiritual Age takes a detailed look at the spirituality of people beyond the fringe of the Church and offers insightful responses to how the Church might address the issue of evangelism in the twenty-first century. Topics include: Big questions people are asking How people view Christians and the Church Listening - its vital importance Achievable ideas for the local church General trends in spirituality and creative evangelism The community as a key to contemporary evangelism This timely and practical book enables all those interested in evangelism to understand the spirituality of people who don't go to Church and to communicate the gospel more effectively. The Explorations series aims to provide a much-needed forum for church leaders, teachers, writers and theologians to stimulate debate, challenge the thinking and practice of the Church at large, and to raise awareness of issues crucial to its future. Contributors: Yvonne RICHMOND, Nick SPENCER, Rob FROST, Anne RICHARDS, Mark IRELAND, Steven CROFT

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual & practical, 23 Jan 2006
This review is from: Evangelism in a Spiritual Age: Communicating Faith in a Changing Culture (Explorations) (Paperback)
The authors present some qualitative research into the spiritual walk of people "beyond the fringe" of the church(es). They then consider this theologically and practically, give examples of ways of relating which have worked here in England.

Some of the examples are specifically Anglican, and might only adapt as far as mainstream churches, but much is of use to any congregation willing to 'think outside the box'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - someone(s) with a realistic approach to spirituality and Christainity, 23 Jun 2006

I really enjoyed this book. It spoke to my personal experiences and also enabled me to 'evangelise' with friends that spoke to them. Rather than dismissing aspects of modern spirituality it trys to detail why and what and how we should respond as Christians - after all isn't our faith 'spiritual'?

5.0 out of 5 stars best of its genre, 6 July 2009
This review is from: Evangelism in a Spiritual Age: Communicating Faith in a Changing Culture (Explorations) (Paperback)
I have read a lot of books on evangelism and on how the Church should interact with its community in the course of my work. This book beats the rest by far.
i think its success lies in excamining matters of faith from the agenda of the unchurched, and makes us approach their thoughts and experiences in a humble and gracious light.
I found it enormously challenging and exciting to look at the community from a perspective of what God is already doing in people's lives.
The bulk of the book contains anecdotal research findings, what people surveyed think about God, spirituality, Church and other issues. Then rather than belittle these views, it goes on to open the field to a number of "experts" who reflect on the findings and offer simple, achievable ways for the Church to meet people where they actually are, not where we would like them to be.
The conclusion I reached was that it would be much easier to just keep playing Churches, but this book has challenged me to a more radical look at how we can draw attention to Jesus.
