Format: Paperback
Length: 1:22 Mins
Evangelion Chronicle: Illustrations features the art from the Evangelion Chronicle series, Side A and Side B books, both in Japanese.

The first edition of Evangelion Chronicle: Illustrations was published in 2008 in Japanese featuring Rei Ayanami on the cover. The revised edition was published in 2011 featuring Asuka in her red suit. This edition translated by Udon is of the revised edition, even though it has the Rei cover art.

This is a huge paperback artbook measuring 10 by 13 inches. It has 136 pages.

The illustrations are based on the original Evangelion series. So you won't get to see Asuka with her pirate eye patch here.

There are two parts to the book. The anime style comes first and covers the characters including the EVAs and ANGELs. It's mostly finalized art with sketches. Besides the three main protagonists, the other characters each have only one page to themselves. I would love to see more of the character designs from different angles and poses though, so the character art feels quite limited in a sense. The characters are drawn by Youichi Fukano while the EVAs and ANGELs are by Hirofumi Ichikawa.

The second part features the painted scenes. Several artists have artworks here so while the designs are fixed, the styles can vary quite a bit. I like the ones from Takuya Io that looks like the TV series screenshots but with a certain glow and film grain added. There are pieces with rather un-Evangelion look because of the way they are painted.

There's not much text except for the one page where all the artists talk about their art and inspiration.

Overall, the art is great and it's a cool book for all Evangelion fans.

This is a beautifully illustrated book however minimal accompanying text makes it hard to recommend to anyone but the biggest fans of the series.

Not the Revised Edition 22 April 2013
By Leland Rzepecki - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Despite what you may have heard, this book is NOT the revised version of the Evangelion Chronicle: Illustrations collection. That revised edition - which is to say the updated Japanese book with Asuka on the cover - contains several additional pages of art inspired both by NGE and Rebuild and is not available in English. See my attached video for a comparison: Both books have exactly the same content starting with the MP Eva spread, so take note of the content included before it in the revised edition.

With that said, this book is still a good buy when you consider its price and availability versus the revised edition but only a collector would have any reason to own it in addition to the revised edition.

A really nice artbook, although maybe not the one for causal fans 28 Jan. 2013
By Synchronicitized - Published on Amazon.com

First, let me say that I enjoy all things Evangelion, and so I bought this artbook sight unseen.

The book's construction is what I've come to expect from Udon Entertainment. The book is big (about 13 by 10 inches), and well-bound. The paper used is high quality, and many of the pages feature glossy illustrations on flat white backgrounds, which makes the images really pop. The book itself looks quite impressive displayed on my shelf.

As for the content, about 1/3 of the pages consist of character art and sketches of the main characters. The other 2/3 features drawings of the Eva Units themselves, drawings of the various Angels, and artists' renderings of scenes from the Eva canon. These scenes range from renditions of the Antarctica expedition to the events in End of Evangelion, so there's a little bit of everything.

Overall, this is an book that I'd recommend. However, if you are expecting an artbook full of character art (like the beautiful image on the cover), you might be a little bit disappointed. I was just a bit disappointed that the various artists collectively got only one page at the end of the book to talk about their contributions, but that's presumably how it was in the Japanese edition. For the more casual Eva fan, or for the fan who is looking for more character art, I'd probably recommend Der Mond: The Art of Neon Genesis Evangelion over this book, as Der Mond focuses more on the characters while this one is more about the Evas and the story.
