Having just watched this movie I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed with this reboot. They've taken an excellent series and actually managed to vastly improve it straight across the board. The characters - particularly Shinji - are all more likeable. Shinji was a horrible whining annoyance in the original Evangelion, but now he has some redeeming qualities and strengths of character that enable the viewer to actually relate to him. Asuka is still a brilliant hot-head, but her insecurities have been heightened, making her more human. Rei has more warmth. And the new EVA pilot Mari is set to be an interesting character, although she isn't given much screen time in this installment. The EVAs and the Angels themselves even have a bit more personality, which is quite an accomplishment for great hulking monsters hell-bent on mass destruction. They all look stunning in their own ways too.
The battle sequences are fast-paced, often brutal, off-set or enhanced by an excellent musical score. The story itself has been condensed and rejigged superbly. I cannot compliment the writers / editors enough.
2.22 is more character-and-plot development than action, but there's still plenty of action to keep you entertained. If I had any complaints at all, it'd be that there's too much "fan service". As much as I love the movie it does make me feel a bit creepy when I'm watching a young cartoon girl having a naked rant. But if that's your thing, there's oodles of it as well.
Very much looking forward to 3.33.
