A generous helping of Autechre's unique sounds, with (1) Goz Quarter a scratchy, trippy number; (2) Latent Quarter the most "industrial," and least satisfying for me; (3) Laughing Quarter my favorite, uptempo and urgent with a hypnotic, flowing quality and probably the most accessible for first-time listeners to Autechre; (4) Draun Quarter, ambient and dreamy. I do not think this is their best work, Tri Repetae being my choice, but still 4 highly enjoyable pieces of the most evocative sculpted sound around.

I've been in to Ae for ages now, and this is still my favopurite release. For me, it seems that sometimes Ae suit EP releases better than album releases, and this is the best example.

The EP is completely coherent. Goz Quarter is a legend, building slowly around a mentalled hip-hop beat, before breaking in to one of the best melodies Autechre have ever produced. Latent Quarter is the soundtrack to a drunken robot oldman in a skanked-up rag n'bone yard, before he gets smacked upside the head by his horse, who's just recently become crazed on the stench of electronic giblets.

Laughing Quarter is quite possibly a murderer, shrunken and digitised for convenience, and is also immediately good. Draun Quarter is the perfect closer, a sprawling, beautiful masterpiece, brilliantly put together - an outstanding track.

I think it's this EP that really propelled me on the costly Ae journey I've blundered through over the past few years. It took me a while to really appreciate it, but once I did I never looked back.

This was one of the first Autechre releases i ever got, and i still think it is the very best. They seem to have a habit of putting the best stuff onto eps and side project releases (gescom), and this is true here. Four tracks, not really mixes at all but distinct tracks. Showing different sides of Autechre, from abstract beats, to something more pouding, to finally a glorious film music style piece which is one of the very best Autechre tracks ever.. Only 4 quid and better than any of their albums!
