Review

"This book contains a number of pearls of clinical wisdom that can be helpful in evaluating suicidal youth... this book represents an up-to-date compendium of information about youth suicide attempts... this book is one worth having as a reference, guide, and teaching tool for those who work with youths at risk of suicidal behavior."
-JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF CHILD & ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY

Product Description

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the emotional, behavioral and cognitive characteristics of adolescents who have attempted suicide. Each chapter opens with a case study vignette from the author's extensive clinical files followed by a summary of the empirical literature. Assessment and treatment practices close each chapter. While suicide is the third largest killer of adolescents, most suicide attempts do not result in death. Therefore the treatment of the suicide attempter following the attempt becomes a significant part of the clinician's work with these adolescents. Moreover, the precursors and behavioral markers for a suicide attempt become important signals for the school counselor, youth worker, or therapist. This book also include assessment measures to use when evaluating an adolescent who has attempted suicide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guidelines for applied research can be derived from within., 26 Jun 2003

This review is from: Evaluating and Treating Adolescent Suicide Attempters: From Research to Practice (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) (Paperback)
I'm currently working on a school-based suicide intervention program in pursuing my PhD degree in Mexico. Eventhough the book covers most areas of interest in youth suicide there are only two chapters (the last two) dedicated to discussing possible empirical guidelines for treating suicide attempters. Naturally, it IS precisely treatment and outcome research with these adolescents that falls behind with what we currently know about teen suicide. Nevertheless, among the significant contributions of the book (profiling youth at-risk and reviewing proximal and distal riks factors for suicide behavior) are the references of scientific journal articles which I'm sure will be of great use to practitioners and grad students in the clinical psychology field. Finally, the case study vignettes offer rich insight on this complex phenomena within a psychosocial perspective.
