Product Description

The Art Book, November, 2007

" What is so striking, and, for me, exciting about this book is that all these essays end up interconnecting in provocative ways. Each takes seriously Hesse's engagement with drawing as a crucial and distinct aspect of her work, with many of her works on paper often produced after, or even in place of, the sculptural object."

Product Description

Eva Hesse (1936-1970) was a highly experimental artist who continually challenged the conventions of her time. For Hesse, drawing played a unique role, providing the nexus between her works in all media. "Eva Hesse Drawing" is the first book to explore her drawing process, following her work from drawing to painting and sculpture, and always back to drawing. The book features important, recently rediscovered 'working drawings', providing an intimate look at Hesse's everyday practice and methodology. An accomplished draftswoman, Hesse began to develop her wandering, tentative line while studying at Yale University in the late 1950s. Her early 1960s works on paper engaged with visual vocabularies from geometry to biomorphic abstraction. In 1965, Hesse combined her tactile sensibility for materials with her stringlike line to achieve a breakthrough in her astonishing reliefs, bridging the space between two and three dimensions. Balancing the disembodiment of line with its intensified materialisation, Hesse went on to develop one of the most innovative oeuvres of the twentieth century, anticipating the hybridisation of media and crossing borderlines linking one impossible space to another.

A true original! 1 Nov 2007

Eva Hesse focused on two main expressive media in her (unfortunately brief) life and career; sculpture and drawings. Better known for the sculptural works, which are so original that they amaze and delight nearly 40 years after their creation, her drawings are also highly original, and captivating. Hesse was one of the originators of the Minimalist style, at least with regard to her drawings, although she couldn't have known that at the time; she was just trying to forge her own expressive identity. This volume explores both her sketches and concepts for her sculptural work as well as drawings created as purely original works on their own. The drawings, particularly the later ones, have a simplicity of expression but with incredibly subtle nuances that give the works an amazing depth of feeling. The catalog is well laid-out with numerous essays, but some of the essays are a bit too heavy-handed and overly intellectual, and in some cases much too long, for this delicate and expressive work. Hence my rating of 4 stars rather than 5. But don't let that put you off; exploring Hesse's body of work on paper is very much worth the price of this fine volume.
great book for knowing the inner side of Eva Hesse 9 Oct 2008

This is a great book if you are interested to know more about the process of Eva Hesse's thinkings & the development of her works. The printing quality is good as well as the design of the cover. I love this book very much except I am disappointment with the wrapping of amazon. It's so bad to get a fantastic & brand new book with damages on it, especially when it is hardcover.
