Having been a long-standing Eva Cassidy fan and a guitarist of very modest talent, I was delighted to find this collection of guitar tabs featuring many of her best loved songs. The book has an introduction penned Eva's father, Hugh Cassidy; it has a family feel to it, music is nicely and clearly hand-lettered and the pages are interspersed by Eva's own sketches and drawings. But as you are likely to want to purchase the book in order to try and replicate Eva's music, how faithfully is the notation reproduced? On the whole, the finger-picking style lends itself to tablature, and I found that the most songs allowed me to have a fair stab - the chords certainly work and the tabs are, by-and-large, accurate albeit that there are some subtle differences between the book and recorded versions. Chords used are mostly 'first position' and a capo is needed for about half the songs. I was slightly disappointed that solos and instrumentals were not generally reproduced; whilst the instrumental for Over the Rainbow is included, others, such as that during Songbird are the poorer for their omission. Most solos are not particularly complex, and with some time and effort can be worked out - but I had hoped that the book's authors would have done that work for me. All-in-all this is a nice book of tablature that will suit guitarists of intermediate standard and better who wish to explore Eva Cassidy's finger-picking guitar style, although the omission of guitar solos means that I only give it 4 stars.
