Product Description

Review

Eva Cassidy was something of a phenomenon. Her album Songbird topped the charts and swiftly went platinum. All of her other albums did equally well, and the acclaim for her voice is matched by the fact that her rendition of Over the Rainbow is one of most requested videos in Top of the Pops' history. What makes her different from so many of her talentless peers is the fact that Cassidy reached the top sans marketing hype, relying on the quality of her voice and word of mouth to make her mark. In 1996, Eva died of cancer, aged 33, virtually unknown at the time outside of the Washington area where she grew up. Her remarkable and tragic story is told in this fascinating biography. As with all such books, purple prose is not avoided throughout, but the worst excesses of showbiz biographies are held at bay. This is a remarkable story of a remarkable woman, and the style here more than does justice to Cassidy's story.

Book Description

Eva Cassidy is the music sensation of the year. Voted one of the voices of the twentieth century, her albums have sold over 1.25 million copies in the last eighteen months.

Being an Eva fan myself, it might be hard for me to give an objective review, however most people that buy this book will be fans already, and it is also hoped that some new people will discover Eva as well through this excellently designed and produced book.

The book contains many unseen pictures, artwork and text by and about Eva.
The chapters are named after Eva's songs, and they all include contributions from many of Eva's friends and family together with a biographical narrative that threads throughout the book.

The book begins with a nice dedication to the people of the British Isles, who took Eva to heart.

Eva's life is discussed in-depth, with many revealing facts and discussions about events that shaped Eva, and her work.

The many songs she arranged, and the bands and musical sets she appeared in are talked about, and also her struggle against the disenchantment of the music industry.

You will want to come back to this book again, and again, to see a lovely picture, or read a passage that tells of Eva's absolute gentleness and beauty.

All in all, this is an absolute must for every Eva fan, and it is well worth a look for anyone else who wants to discover the fascinating and so tragically short story of a beautiful and talented woman who against all the odds managed to make it to the top. In style.

5 stars not enough! 1 Oct 2001
Format:Hardcover
A rare and wonderful book that achieves the seemingly impossible - it actually brings Eva back to life. As you turn the pages, you can feel her spirit running through every paragraph and leaping off the page, straight into your erstwhile stony heart.

I never knew Eva Cassidy. Then again, who did?

She was a transient presence, a songbird released among us for an all too brief moment. A voice to move mountains, to take us to the end of rainbows... a voice that can take us there still.

Eva - wherever you are - here is a work that stands testament to you and your tragic, fragile, yet strangely beautiful life. As I read on, I knew for sure that, somewhere, anywhere, you are singing still...

Breathtaking 23 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I sat down last night having bought Songbird a few weeks ago, and couldn't put it down. I read it cover to cover. It is an incredible book. I only descovered Eva's music at the end of 2000, but fell in love straight away.

This book really gives a clearer picture of the type of person that she was through accounts by the people that knew her best. The description of her last public performance brought a tear to my eye, and the moving accounts of her last day made me reach for the tissues.

After having read the book, there is one important lesson that was really reinforced. To grab every opportunity that comes along. Don't wait for anyone else, if you want something, make it happen. At the end a couple of people have regrets saying they wished they had recorded with her or played with her etc. I do not have any regrets in life, and Eva's moving account shows just how fragile life can be, and how it can be snatched away from us at any moment. Live and enjoy everyday because you neevr know what is around the next corner.

This book is dedicated to us, the people of the British Isles. I can't recomment it enough. My only regret is not descovering her music earlier.
