Amazon.co.uk Review

It's easy to forget just how innovative and interesting the videos turned out by the Eurythmics throughout the 1980s were--at least until you take this 21-song anthology for a spin. From 1982's "Love is a Stranger" through 1989's "Angel", Eurythmics Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart, working with a variety of producers and directors (sometimes including Stewart himself), turned out a remarkable array of clips. Often enigmatic, usually arty, sometimes rather cold and humourless (if not un-amusing), they are never less than thoughtful and provocative, with an extraordinary range of ideas and techniques.

Those same adjectives apply to Lennox, who's not only a sultry, soulful vocalist but a fascinatingly chameleonic visual presence; she assumes dozens of different personas, from red-haired androgyne to Monroe-esque vamp, from mousy homemaker to leather-clad dominatrix and beyond (she and Stewart both play some 15 or more different roles in "The King & Queen of America" alone), and is rarely less than riveting. It also doesn't hurt that the visuals accompany some outstanding songs and performances, such as "Sweet Dreams", "Here Comes the Rain", "Sisters are Doin' it for Themselves" (with Aretha Franklin), "Who's That Girl?", "Missionary Man", "Miracle of Love", "Would I Lie to You?", and many more. And while the synth-pop style of the earlier recordings sounds a bit dated these days, the videos have lost none of their appeal. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com

Ok, so the videos are all from the 80s, when the music videos were still evolving. Yet Eurythmics did some great ones, simple yet effective.
"Love Is A Stranger" is a delight, with Annie disguising herself in fur and wigs for the first time. "Who's That Girl" where she goes as far as kissing herself (as a man - see to believe), "Miracle Of Love", which still touches everyone who was not too young when it came out. With that offcenter close up in a grainy black and white, oh man, I get goosebumps just thinking about it. Here is the track listing of the dvd, which offers 5 videos taken off the "Ultimate Collection":

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
Love Is A Stranger
Who's That Girl
Right By Your Side
Here Comes The Rain Again
Sex Crime (1984)
Julia
Would I Lie To You?
There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)
Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves
It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)
When Tomorrow Comes
Thorn In My Side
Miracle Of Love
Missionary Man
Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)
I Need A Man
You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart
Don't Ask Me Why
The King And Queen Of America
Angel

No complaints as regards the musical content of this DVD, but some groups are far more valuable for their music than for their videoclip worth. Eurythmics is one such band, with little to gaze at visually but Annie Lennox's beautifully sculptured face - while all the time marvelling at her voice - catching the occasional Dave Stewart antic - incapable though he is of upstaging his lead singer - while delighting at the group's genial musical versatility. Still, I must insist that the DVD offers little one wouldn't already get from the CD version of this Greatest Hits' Collection: no extras, no frills, nothing but music... But, again, no complaints.

I bought this DVD having narrowly escaped ordering the later collection with less tracks - it's really nostalgic (though I don't like the shouty 'links' between songs) considering the Eurythmics are not one of my favourite bands (I'm 60s and 70s vintage). A lot of the fun is identifying the ladies in 'Who's That Girl?', especially the wispy-but-beautiful Kate Garner of Haysi Fantayzee - please nobody tells me she's not in it! If you like more than about three of their songs, this is great value.
