After the 'money no object' blowouts staged by the Russians in 2009 and Azerbaijan in 2012, it was now time for a Swedish austerity Eurovision. Portugal and Bosnia sat the whole thing out pleading poverty, while Armenia returned after its boycott of the previous year's contest in Baku with a rock dirge penned by Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi. Other star names lining up for battle included Holland's Anouk, Germany's Eurodance big hitters Cascada, Italy's Marco Mengoni and the UK's veteran rock chic Bonnie Tyler, a curious (and ultimately ill-judged) choice by the BBC given that she had been without a hit at home for 30 years. Switzerland on the other hand sent a Salvation Army band that included one member in his 90s. Among the best songs were a gentle hipster lullaby from Hungary, the Norwegian ice maiden and her dirty electro number "I Feed You My Love" and a boisterous ska/folk knock-about from Greece commenting on that nation's debt crisis called "Alcohol Is Free". In the end the prize was snatched by a barefoot Danish pixie girl backed by her tin whistle-toting drummer boys but this CD remains an enjoyable souvenir of all the 39 entries and a testament to how this iconic TV institution is going from strength to strength.

The double CD contains all 39 entries, fewer than normal because of the current economic situation, and it is good to hear the songs without the visual distractions that can spoil the contest.

My favourite three offerings are Denmark's Emmeline de Forest, the strong favourite among the bookmakers, singing Only Teardrops, the Croatian group Klapa s Mora with an Il Divo type song Mizerja, and the idealistic Russian entry, What If from Dina Garipova. The world would be a better place if Vladimir Putin shared the song's philosophy. UK's Bonnie Tyler deserves a top ten placing with Believe In Me. A real horror song comes from Montenegro and France's entry is little better and if either wins I will seriously consider not watching the programme again.

Listening to the two CDs is a marathon effort and requires more than one playing before considered judgments can be made. Spring wouldn't be spring without the Eurovision Song Contest and long may the jamboree continue.

A good year for Eurovision, with some proper songs that could stand alone in the charts (You, Only Teardrops) or as well respected quality music (Birds).

Teardrops are falling on my head.

How to explain the 2013 contest... the usual ragtag of cultural misfits a contest can bring, and then there is the United Kingdom.

This album is different to other ESC Albums in that it included an extra track that was written not by or for a contestant but rather an Anthem for the Contest itself, it was unknown at the time if this anthem written by Benny and Bjorn from ABBA and produced by Avicci, young Swedish Music Producer would become the replacement to Marc-Antoine Charpentier's "Prelude to Te Deum" that plays at the start of every transmission of the European Broadcasting Union. It called on the world to take the World and change it for themselves, for "We Write The Story".

Another Good Year for Eurovision. The Swedes did a great job at hosting the event. My favourite song was "Waterfall" from Georgia, which I thought was slightly better than "Only Teardrops", while my wife favoured Croatia's Klapa s Mora's "Mizerja". In any case, there were a number of good entries. And a special mention of Switzerland's Takasa for having the oldest musician ever on Eurovision - their song was good too. The only "disappointment" was that the wonderful "We Are One" anthem is not included on the CDs.

The songs are not as good as previous years. I have heard better songs in other years. Nevertheless, it will add to my collection.

As I am a huge Eurovision fan, I bought the CD and MP3 option. The MP3 files took a while to download (about 20 minutes, varies for different types of broadband). I am waiting for the CD, but in summary the MP3's are high quality.

It is very easy to buy and download. The overall quality of these great musics is very satisfying. I bought this right after the Eurovision show, and it is a good way to remember the happy time I spent with my friends watching it and partying through the night.
