This CD-ROM, designed for use within Windows 95 or 98 on a PC, endeavours to form the basis of both tutorial and revision notes for the GCSE English course. It is not intended as a substitute for initial study, but as a tutorial to accompany the actual course. The material in this course consists of three basic types: interactive lessons, tests, and exams. The lessons are visually interesting, and cover a variety of activities and disciples, grouped under the topics Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. Interactivity is urged, and includes answering questions using such tools as the Windows "drag and drop" feature, and making good use of accessories such as Notepad. One innovative session, for example, features a "game" where the student, as a copy editor, is responsible for proofreading a news story (for spelling, grammar and even "style") that has come in to the newspaper office, and must do so with a clock ticking the seconds away toward press time. As the material is installed and copied to disk, an individual course, including progress through it, can be personalised and charted. Acrobat Reader (for PDF files) is required to access the resource materials on the CD, and if this is not already on the system, the CD installation program will supply it. Accompanying the installation CD is a pamphlet liner note with simple instructions for installation and use of the English course. Screens, which include some well-designed "cribs" (short, useful summaries presented in a visually easy to remember format) can usually be printed. This will prove to be a useful tool as part of a purposeful revision programme. About 38 Megabytes are stored on the local hard disk to support the running of this program, plus another seven and a half megabytes of specific course material (not counting Acrobat Reader). --Wilf Hey
