Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Have you ever felt that you have what it takes to become a Thunderbird? If so, now is your chance. In the Thunderbirds Operation Volcano CD-ROM you get to help the International Rescue heroes in a mission--and do some learning at the same time. Billed as an "educational adventure" the idea is that you'll learn a thing or two about volcanoes, as well as maths, English, geography, earth science, sequencing and comprehension as you go along. The learning is designed to tie in with the UK National Curriculum, and is aimed at youngsters aged 7 and up.

Guaranteed to appeal to fans of the TV series, Thunderbirds Operation Volcano is packed with all sorts of surprises, so you are never quite sure what is going to happen next. There are nine missions to complete, with four levels of difficulty. The first mission, involving Thunderbird 5, has you working out the location of an erupting volcano. Subsequent missions involve rescuing people before the volcano erupts, and require the use of different Thunderbird vehicles. They need to be completed against the clock. The action follows a logical sequence, and you can only progress to the next section when the current one has been completed. To encourage you, successfully getting through the tasks in each section is rewarded with a Thunderbirds style sequence. --Sandra Vogel

Manufacturer's Description

Thunderbirds Operation Volcano A volcano is erupting and Thunderbirds swings into action to prevent disaster. You join them in this exciting educational adventure, having loads of fun and learning at the same time.

You're on Thunderbird 5 when you receive a message about the Volcano then use co-ordinate and grid references to find its exact location in the World.

The action then moves to Brain's laboratory where you track a course to the Volcano, avoiding no-fly areas and working out flying and arrival times.

Thunderbird 1 files a reconnaissance mission, followed by Thunderbird 4 submarine, winch pod and Firefly bulldozer. Using different pods lets you complete a series of challenging rescue missions as you race against time.

Don't touch this!!! 31 Dec 2002
A huge disappointment! Would have preferred to give it no stars! Bought this (not from Amazon) for my 5 year old who is pretty adept at computer usage. Swayed to buy it by the fact that it states it has educational value. Never got to see this aspect because the whole operation of the programme is so inept it is unbelievable that it ever got on the market. There is no guidance whatsoever as to what keys to use either on screen or hard copy and the instructions are so detailed and scroll so quickly that one can't take it all in and it can't be backtracked either. Considering that Thunderbirds appeals to young children there is no way that a child can be expected to cope with such poor programming. A thoroughly frustrating experience using this, for both myself and my son.

Diabolical. With the exception of the video clips, the whole program is painfully slow. The box states that it is suitable for children of all ages. This is clearly not the case as all instructions are written on the screen with no audio backup for young children. The "exciting 3D graphics" are anything but. Thunderbird 1 flies over a completely flat landscape dotted with simply box shape buildings and the odd jagged "lump" indicating a mountain. Waste of money.

At last a computer game my children like that doesn't involve shooting anyone and it's educational! There should be more stuff around like this.
