Dot-com leaders are given the Hello! treatment, 26 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Europe's A-list: The Next Frontier (Paperback)
The premise of Liza Roberts' book, Europe's A List: The movers and shakers of the European cyber-scene is straight-forward enough: US born Roberts used her position as London Bureau Chief of CBS MarketWatch to identify and interview some 50 individuals whom she perceived to be leaders of the new economy. Her criteria are not at all clear, and are certainly questionable, but even so, those profiled are the kind of people everyone would have wanted to shake vigorously by the hand at a First Tuesday party in the summer of 2000. The trouble was, half way through the project, the new economy mirage evaporated like morning mist, leaving many of the heroes looking distinctly daft.
Roberts, a journalist, has dealt with this by simply adding a few caveats here and there, warning that the rules are changing, that times may be tougher, and updating a few facts. But it is not enough: these profiles are uncritical to the point of being fawning, and as such, they are misleading, simplistic and naïve. Many (not all, but many) of the people given the Hello! treatment in this flimsy tome have wasted an awful lot of other people's money trying to conjure up new businesses without paying proper regard to business fundamentals. Surely, a CBS journalist should be trying to map how this strange dot-com madness infected so many fine minds, not exculpate them all. Alas, the goal of this book seems to be ingratiation, not revelation.
To be fair, it is not all mush. Some of the individuals identified are outstanding business people, technologists or venture capitalists, and even most of those who have run into difficulties are still rich, influential, and still trying to build businesses. But the reader will need an awfully sweet tooth.

Fascinating characters brilliantly portrayed, 21 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Europe's A-list: The Next Frontier (Paperback)
Europe's A-list by Liza Roberts is terrific. Each of the 50 short profiles paints a fascinating picture of someone who has had an important impact on the development of the new economy in Europe. Be they entrepreneurs, financiers, scientists or business executives, each has a trenchant story to tell, and Roberts relates it with lucidity and verve. To fault the book, as another reviewer does, because the bloom is off the New Economy rose, is to miss the point. This book is a look at fascinating characters who have interesting, and often amazing, accomplishments behind them -- irrespective of the sector's equity market performance at the moment. To imply that any discussion of the high-tech sector in Europe should take the view that the achievements of the past five years are somehow delegitimized by the correction in equity markets seems short-sighted and naive. Indeed, even if one had no interest in how the internet has developed in Europe, the book would be worth reading for the author's writing style alone. She is a keen observer, a skilled phrasemaker and renders her characters with sharp and witty insight. For anyone who does want or need to know more about the development of the European internet scene, this is a must-read. Can't wait for the sequel!
