Amazon.co.uk Review

In the case of Moondogg, the jury will probably be out forever as to where his wit ends and his wisdom begins. These pieces, recorded in Germany when the composer moved to Europe in the 70s, contain a pleasing mixture of both. The first is a commemorative piece marking the 1976 Viking mission to Mars, its minimalist melody played on a celeste and accompanied by ring-modulated percussion. We then get a Charles-Ives-meets-Simon-Jeffes string quartet, entitled Chaconne in G while seemingly having been written in four rather than three-beat measures (but, hey...), an overdubbed fanfare for French horn(s) and another string quartet piece which is (surprisingly?) firmly anchored in the Western classical tradition. Then we're back to the celeste again for a lilting, humorous waltz, then there's a sequence of organ works which, intentionally or not, run the gamut of the instrument's musical traditions and sonic capabilities, while at the same time inventing a couple more of each. The whole album is gently elevating and well-recorded, although non-German speakers will be in the dark when it comes to the booklet notes.--Roger Thomas
