Product Description

Product Description

Europe Beyond Your Means is a hilarious and satirical travel guide focused on understanding Parisian culture and enhancing the overall experience of visiting one of the world's most celebrated cities. Complete with travel suggestions, witty observations and relevant narratives of a nature that you won't find in typical travel literature, this book is guaranteed to augment any visit to Paris. By pointing out the endearing quirks of the French and the throngs of tourists who visit each year, Europe Beyond Your Means takes readers through the essential vacation steps of packing, arrival, necessary activities, cultural realizations and the difficult acceptance of having to eventually return home. This book is written for those who seek the most out of travel by trying to grasp the local culture and do not always feel accounted for by guides propagating the widely popular "ten-dollar-a-day" approach. In short, Europe Beyond Your Means is a must have companion piece for any erudite traveler to Paris who wants to laugh a little along the way.

Paris "the right way"! 31 Jan 2009
By Jessica D. Durst - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I fancy myself to be an experienced world traveler. I've done all the cliché European trips: fell in love in Prague, drank my way through Italy, hostel-ed through much of Germany, and explored the naughty side of Amsterdam. But, Paris, ah...Paris, this one I've saved. Not willing to delve into the courtship of one of the world's most celebrated locales until I had the resources to do it properly, I've kept a trip to Paris on my 'to do' list. However, aside from knowing the names of a few choice hotels and the most obvious sights to visit, I didn't really know how to do Paris "the right way". That is, until now. Enter Europe Beyond Your Means: The Paris Edition. Not only is this a supremely smart and funny book, it spells out all that I need to know in order to make my trip to Paris all that I dreamed it could be. From what to wear (little black dress and high-heeled boots--check), where to eat, drink and people watch, and even how to have an American day in Paris, this unconventional travel guide doesn't hold anything back. There's even a step by step route for a pub crawl, when you want to see the British side of France. This book offers the perfect ways to delight in The City of Lights without worrying that you're missing something. It's a brilliant guide, filled with nuance of French lifestyle that the savvy visitor should know and hilarious personal stories written by two guys who obviously live clever and charismatic lives. It's just what I needed in order to finally plan my long anticipated first trip to Paris. Bravo!

Europe Beyond Your Means is Exceptional!! 30 Jan 2009
By Johnny Zvolensky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is literally the most entertaining travel guide I have read on several different levels. I was once a "Rick Steves-travel-book-toting-budget-bopping" dweeb, and the descriptions of such a traveler in this book are hilarious. I can picture myself with a backpack on my chest, one on my shoulder; and of course, a enormous, looming pack on my back, with scarves and shoes tied off of every latch possible like some roving, gypsy camel. Why did I do this??!! All because of Rick Steves-type, "keep it under budget by being prepared" travel guides. This book will steer the "Beyond Your Means" traveler in the right direction of the "cool" way to travel and actually give great examples of how to immerse yourself comfortably in the culture unlike some guides that will promote a big belly-flop, "I'm from the USA", plunge. The BYM Paris Edition gives great anecdotes, promotes slinging the budget in favor of simply enjoying yourself, gives memorable travel advice, and lays the educational ground work to trod one's own way through Paris. Most importantly, this book has made me laugh out loud, from the writers' social commentary and traveler stereotypes,to the witty innuendos and out-of-the-box metaphors (i.e. the section "High School Diplomacy in the Western World"). When is the London edition coming out!! Bravo Norgard and Lucas, or shall I say "Félicitations!"

Required Reading for Anyone with a Sense of Humor and a Love for Life 30 Jan 2009
By Casey Baker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I picked up this book as a gift for a friend who will be traveling Europe this summer. One afternoon prior to giving it to her, I decided to thumb through it myself. After just a few pages, I was hooked. Lucas and Norgard deftly analyze and describe the Parisian life, all the while keeping tongue firmly planted in cheek. Be it a brilliant metaphor of international relations as a high school homeroom class, or tales of singlehandly improving U.S.-Franco relations by a waiting tireless hours for a $30 martini, the authors walk a delicate balance of derision and affection. If it is true that we laugh because we love, then consider me smitten by France and this book. In fact, I purchased another 3 copies: one for myself to keep, and two for other world travelers I know.
