Inside the SOE
Edward Cookridge's "Set Europe Ablaze" is an unofficial but extensive history of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) by a prolific writer on intelligence activities and a former intelligence officer. Although denied access to official SOE records, the author spent six years in research for this history and found the most relevant files on SOE that were available at the time for his inspection, as well as archives from other nations; the author also cities these primary sources in his extensive bibliography. This book is especially valuable when used with M.R.D. Foot's work "SOE in France." The author was also critical of some of the decisions taken in SOE and as a result he met resistance in obtaining clearance from Britain security authorities for publication of this book.
