Book Description

28 Sep 2011
French photographer Eugene Atget (February 12, 1857 - August 4, 1927) was best-known for his incredible photographs documenting the architecture and street scenes of Paris. This book showcases the images he captured between 1898 and 1924 - images of the 'old Paris', represented with an almost surreal, dream-like quality. He photographed the seine, the streets, the incredible architecture and the facades of buildings and palaces, the courtyards, apartment interiors, stairwells, parks, shop windows and the urban environment - replete with street traders, fairgrounds and prostitutes - building an enormous artistic documentary collection of the French capital. The book has been published to accompany an exhibition organised by the Mapfre Foundation in collaboration with the Museum Carnavalet in Paris that will travel to the Fotomuseum of Rotterdam and the New Gallery of Sydney.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's in English....!!! 23 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
A most beautiful book, one I am truly proud to own.
It sits, now, alongside a recently acquired tome that
accompanied the 2007 Paris exhibition of Atget's works.
Whilst also proud of that acquisition, this, "Paris 1898-1924" is in English...!!
I doubt very much I could have waited almost a year for the exhibition to roll 'round before I got my hands on this edition.
A must for any devotee.

I am a great lover of the work of Eugene Atget's photography. I discovered his work in the library when I was taking a summer course in art design in college 30 years ago and needed some black and white photos for a project. The photos of old Paris in the the late 1800s and early 1900s were so captivating that I have been searching far and wide for Atget photography books. The accompanying text was excellent as well; I did not know that Man Ray was a friend and collector of his work,
