This is a magnificent CD from start to finish, and the quality of the recording (1971) is very good, only occasionally a bit brittle in some louder moments. Richter's version of the Etudes must be on most people's (very) short list, beside Cortot, Kempff and maybe Arrau. His Schumann is high-powered, but he manages even so usually to plumb the lyrical depths as well. Kempff, in late age, is at times under-powered, although matchlessly lyrical. Both of these great pianists do justice to the many-strandedness of Schumann's writing, and the vulnerability that is often at its core. Arrau's recording is fine when I am in a certain kind of introspective mood (indeed, then it is great!) but at other times several sections of it can seem becalmed and weighed-down.

I had never heard the Bunte Blätter before buying this CD. Since then, I have immersed myself in them (and in Richter's BBC live performance of three years earlier). Initially, I missed the lack of a unifying thread, for these are separate pieces (composed at different times and later collected together), not an organically-growing sequence culminating in a finale, in the manner of the Etudes symphoniques, the Davidsbündlertänze, Carnaval or Humoreske. I heard in some of them the pallor and short-windedness that I used to feel characterised the "fading powers" of the later Schumann. I am not so sure, now that I have listened to them many times and got to know them thoroughly. Yes, later Schumann is different, and certainly in some ways less assured than the young composer's work.

Like his mentor Heinrich Neuhaus, Richter excells in playing Schumann. I can not think of any bad performances of Schumann in my Richter collection. Always brilliant, exquisitely delicate and captivating like these recordings on this CD.
