Product Description

Voices woven through staccato rhythms lead you to a narrow alley. Laughter flows from beneath a door. It opens to a kaleidoscope of sound and color, led by an "azmari" singing a song of invitation. A waiter smiles as you glance in the book - you order a "bira" and some "ocholoni." The day had started with a mountain-top view of the Blue Nile and now the vibrant city nightlife takes you in...

Handy guide! 28 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book to accompany my Colloquial Amharic (Appleyard) book. It is the perfect size to carry around and is useful in summarising grammar and learning the Fidal (syllabic alphabet). I think it would be perfect for anyone planning a trip to Ethiopia or wants to grasp the basics of the language. The only downside is that I don't think the transliteration of the Amharic is always 100% as it should be and doesn't always coincide with the transliteration of some other books.

Amharic here I come 6 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia and there are 70 other languages. Only a few people in the rural areas speak any English. This book got me off to a brilliant start and I swotted a few words each evening and the book was perfect for my sort of casual learning. Please buy it if you go to this country for it is the best book if you want to learn every-day conversation.

This book serves as a wonderful vocabulary reference! 30 Jan 2009
By Halle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been studying Amharic for years and I find this book to be very useful. It not only serve as a good phrase guide but also as a great vocabulary reference book. I am using the book to study Amharic from English but I have many Ethiopian friends who are using this book to study English from the Amharic. As far as teaching Amharic grammar(sentence structuring), I didn't find the book helpful. If you're looking for a book to build your Amharic vocabulary, this book is wonderful.

This compact guide is perfect for your purse and travel. It concisely contains enough for some basic language to get around. It is a little pricey, but gets the job done.

Excellent resource! 11 Dec 2010
By MarinaMama - Published on Amazon.com

I am also using the EuroTalk Talk Now program to learn Amharic, but it lacks many useful phrases. The Lonely Planet phrasebook seems to contain everything I'll ever need and it's engaging to read. There's also a wealth of advice (how to hitchhike, for example)and cultural information and it's a handy size to take everywhere. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning to visit Ethiopia.
