I bought this to supplement the Lonely Planet Guie to Ethiopia.

A handy sized volume which will fit fit in a pocket, it is a mine of information. There is plenty of history for those who are interested and gives practical tips for the first time visitor. Written by a frequent traveller to Ethiopia, this is a must read to get rare insights and have them at one's fingertips.

This book will really be used in our family as we have a little granddaughter from Ethiopia. Learning customs and the culture of her native country is important to all of us. It will also be helpful to anyone traveling in a country whose customs may be different but which are greatly valued.

A great overview of cultural topics. Sections are short and easy to ready. Provides a great flavor of the people, food, and customs. This also helped me identify specific historical events and geographic places to study before my trip.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ethiopia 13 Oct 2011
By Kathryn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was merely okay. I read this in honor of my son's birth country for his 2nd birthday. Some of it was interesting; some wasn't; some I already knew and much of it seemed to be slanted to the middle or upper class Ethiopians. Although it took 4 days, it seemed longer and I was glad for the most part to be finished. But is a decent book to read if you know nothing about Ethiopia or are planning to travel there.

I would definitely recommend this book for a business person or researcher going to Ethiopia. It is clear the author has first hand experience in the country.It is not too exhausted, but has just the right about of information.

The discovery in 1974 of Dinkenesh (also known as “Lucy”), the oldest known hominid skeleton, in the Rift Valley at Hadar in Afar Region, seems to establish Ethiopia as the Cradle of Mankind. "e;

The time of day is also reckoned differently. This follows the traditional Middle Eastern twelve-hour clock, when the hours are counted from dawn, being 6:00 a.m. Thus 9:00 a.m. is three o’clock in Ethiopia, and twelve noon is six o’clock. "e;

Perhaps the name given by Ethiopians for the Blue Nile—Ghion, also used in the Bible’s Book of Genesis for one of the four rivers of Eden—reflects this earliest of early times? "e;
