The fact that an act would cause pain normally counts against doing it. The fact that the act is brave normally counts in favour of doing it. Normally? Or always? Dancy's argument is that it is never always. 'Ethics Without Principles' argues that any and all of our reasons for actions can count for or against doing that action depending on the circumstances. In moral philosophy this position has come to be known as particularism and Dancy is the leading proponent of this idea. The opposing position is known as generalism, and practically every debate within moral philosophy up until now has taken place within its sphere. But particularism, though contentious, is no obscure leftfield tract. Dancy is rigorous in his argument, smatters the technical analysis with lively examples and is candid regarding areas that need development. This is thorough-bred philosophy which really shakes up our understanding of the nature of moral reasoning.
