Product Description

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a technology used to safely pass electrical power, along with data, over Ethernet cabling. By using free wires in the Ethernet cabling, PoE is a new exciting technology. By using PoE you can easily extend the range (30 metres) of your Ethernet devices without the need for a seperate power cable (to the loft, the conservatory etc.). Compatible with all types of different devices such as IP telephones, IP cameras, wireless LAN access points and much more.

I have my BT Openreach fibre modem and Sky Hub near the main phone socket - both powered through a UPS. But our main TP-Link wifi/router is in the living room, connected to the Hub by a 12m Cat6 ethernet cable. In the case of a power outage, the BT/Sky boxes would still work, but our laptops would lose internet connectivity anyway because the TP-Link router would go down.

With this Passive PoE kit installed at either end of the 12m cable run, we can locate the 12V power supply/transformer beside the modem/hub, power it directly from the UPS, and then send the 12V DC power down the ethernet cable to power the TP-Link router in the living room!!!
It also provides a side benefit of reducing by one the number of cables in the living room.

I was initially skeptical about the voltage drop - i.e. I thought that the 12m cable run would attenuate the power down to a level where it would not be strong enough to power the TP-Link router. But after checking with a multimeter, I was surprised to see that there was very little voltage drop at all - it remeained stubbornly near 12V.

A simple but effective solution.

I made up my own cat5 cable to go with this. It was about 10m in length and the device was rated at a maximum of 7W at 12 volts with a 10V - 13.5V supply variability. Will it work for you? The higher the power the greater the voltage drop and hence the shorter the possible cable length.

This is an extremely useful little contraption for remotely powering Cat 5 (100mb) network devices, reducing the amount of wires that I need to run around the house as power and data go down the same wire. I've got this POE kit powering a Netgear GS605 switch over a 10 metre Cat 6 cable with no problem. It should be noted that this kit is only Cat 5 (10/100mb) so if you install it on either end of a Cat 6 gigabit connection it'll reduce the speed to 100mb. Fortunately for me it does't matter as the other end of the cable is connected to a cat 5 cable router.

This pair of devices is brilliant and so cost effective. I used mine to move my wifi router from the useless location it was in - due to the nearest mains socket - to a perfect location where there isn't a mains socket.
Just plug one of the devices in the network, switch, modem or computer and the routers power supply into it.
Then run a SINGLE piece of network cable to where you want your wifi router (or whatever), connect the other device to the cable and plug the device into your wifi router/whatever. Voila! You network attached device, powered and where you want it.

Got an approx. 12m CAT6 cable going to a switch to a room and I wanted it to be powered by my UPS in the source room. I connected these adapters up and they work wonderfully.

Does what it is meant to do. Functional & effective, but don't forget the voltage drop, which can become quite significant over the length of the 'connecting' CAT5 cable

I'm using this so I can situate my VDSL modem next to the master socket and away from the router, without having to install a mains socket next to the master socket. Distance is about 25m. It works like a dream (there doesn't seem to be any significant voltage drop - the modem seems perfectly happy).
