This is one of the best books I have read on Ethernet and fully up to the very high standards I have come to expect of the O'Reilly series.The purpose of the book appears to be to fill in the detail and background of a complex and highly-evolved networking system. It helps to have a basic knowledge of networking before reading the book - the author makes little effort to go into detail about the protocols that sit on top of Ethernet or the setup of workstations and servers that might make use of it. The book makes a very good job of interpreting the IEEE802.3 standard and converting it into plain readable text. It also includes a wealth of practical advice and observations that only come from great experience and exposure to Ethernet networks. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to gain a thorough understanding of Ethernet. However, as is common in this area of technology, the book is now showing signs of its age, being three years old. Gigabit Ethernet was in its infancy at the time of publication and could do with more information on practical implementations, and Wireless Ethernet is completely omitted. I look forward to the next edition!

Good - but dated,

This is a pretty decent coverage of 10Mbps up to 1Gbps Ethernet. However, it talks of how RSTP is being worked on as a standard by the IEEE, it was released 10 years ago. It also does not cover 10Gbps, never mind the newer work on 40 or 100Gbps.
I thought it would be up to date because the published date is 2009 but I guess that was the Ebook version.

This is a great book for learning all about the ins-and-outs of how to create and manage a network. It is very easy to read and, like many O'Reilly titles, works brilliantly as a reference book once you have read through it. Thoroughly recommended.
