Sixteen year-old, Skyla Messenger is a dead girl walking.

When her newly remarried mother moves the family to Paragon Island, to a house that is rumored to be haunted, Skyla finds refuge in Logan Oliver, a boy who shares her unique ability to read minds.

Skyla discovers Logan holds the answers to the questions she’s been looking for, but his reluctance to give her the knowledge she desires leaves her believing Logan has a few secrets of his own.

Skyla’s bloodlines may just be connected to the most powerful angelic beings that roam the earth, and the more she knows, the more danger she seems to be in.

Suddenly an entire faction of earthbound angels want her dead, but Skyla is nowhere near done living—and she's not going down without a fight.
It's on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Story: gripping; writing: baffling 22 April 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First off I should admit I have read all six books released so far, so two stars may seem overly harsh! The thing is that although the storyline keeps me interested, and some of the characters (particularly Gage) are lovable, I find the writing nothing short of atrocious at times. I have to sift through far too many sentences to get the the intended meaning behind them, and sometimes I still come up blank. The author seems to have referred to a thesaurus rather frequently without knowing what the words she uses actually mean or what context they would be appropriate in. The misuse of words is somewhat staggering, and the fact that the author mentioned on her blog that she used an editor for (at least) book 3 leaves my brain spinning. There is also some apparent inconsistency in the plot and behaviour of characters, and some ideas are left hanging so I feel the story could use a little tidying up.

I'm not going to go on, because, as I said, I *have* read all the books, and the idea is definitely good (hence the optioning by 20th Century Fox for a TV series). However, and I hope I don't come across as unreasonable, every time I have read one of these books I've been rather stunned by some of the, um, infelicities in the writing. Editing a book should extend further than running a spell-check!

I hope I haven't made any mistakes in writing this review -- now that would be embarrassing.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 9 Jun. 2011
    Format:Kindle Edition
I first chose this book as the price attracted me and i was pleasantly surprised after finishing this book!
It is such a good book and every page has something new and exciting!
It's not cringe worthy like a lot of the teen paranormal fantasy out at the moment and actually made me laugh as she is a surprisingly normal human being apart from the fact that she can read minds.
Gage and Logan are the ideal dream guys to have in your life and i'm officially in love with them. Also this book just gets started on the first page. The relationships get started and there are no boring books.
I highly recommend this book! And the second book is just as good as the first. Great series for a holiday read or a distraction from revision. X

4.0 out of 5 stars Good interesting read 20 July 2011

I really enjoyed this book (and am already completing the third in the series as i write!)
It's a good story - enough character interaction so that you really believe what each person feels or thinks. (I hate nothing more than 'she felt this' but doesn't even speak to them)
I liked the fact that you don't trust the characters she doesn't and particularly the relationship with her stepfather though I do get a little lack luster from the one with her mother - there are strains there that aren't compeltely understandable.
The love interests are great - and they are nice characters that you actually appreciate our heroine getting to know.
Definitly one to pick up and read if youu are into your indy, supernatural or YA books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really sure what to make of this one 14 July 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book but there was quite a bit that irritated me about it. Sometimes the author seemed to try to be too clever with descriptive writing and I found myself drifting.

The main character's relationship with her stepfather is a bit weird. All you really ascertain is that he's a bit overbearing and tight with money. Other than the fact that he's the 'replacement' to her father, there is nothing to explain the deep level of her hatred for him. Likewise, her relationship with her mother is a little strange.

At one point she is admitted to a psych ward which makes no sense whatsover in the story. It made it slightly less believable and didn't really add anything to the story. I get the impression this was supposed to outrage the reader to make you hate the stepfather/mother but it just didn't have that effect for me.

The main character seems to experience something along the lines of 'love at first sight' with Logan but it just didn't it well with me. It was too much too soon. Also, she is angry at Logan for hanging around with Michelle and yet he isn't bothered when she's caught in a compromising position with Gage. It all just seemed a bit weird.

Also they make reference to the only way Celestra can die but that isn't how Chloe died or how Fems kill so not sure if that was an oversight?

All in all, it was an OK throwaway read but it just seemed a bit lacking. I won't be downloading the rest in the series.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Great 23 Mar. 2014

Free download. I love reading about Angels, this story was very different. Skyla is a young girl with the usual hang ups. A silly step dad who rules everything including moving the whole family across the country. The very same day she arrives she meets Bree, who introduced Skyla to Logan and Gage Oliver, cousins. Skyla is instantly attracted to Logan and it would seem the feelings mutual. It's not until Skyla hears Logan's thoughts and realises that he has the same gift as hear, being able to hear thoughts by touch. They begin to see each other but then things start to go wrong when other fractions of angels look to hurt Skyla. Logan does his best to protect her but things need to change in order to protect each of them. This story is sweet and loving, even with the family angst and crappy things happening all around them. Their feelings are obvious. The other characters in the story make for interesting reading and provide a real feel. Overall enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more. Great paranormal read.

The author jumps around, no real structure to the story. If you're looking for a great book in the lines of this one, go for Kate Lauren, Fallen series.
