Product Description

Edgy gay-interest drama from director Quentin Lee. Ethan Mao (Jun Hee Lee) is a troubled teenager who is thrown out of his home when his stepmother finds a gay pornographic magazine under his bed. Forced to make a living as a hustler on the streets of Los Angeles, Ethan is soon befriended by drug dealer Remigio (Jerry Hernandez), who gradually begins to fall in love with him. When Ethan hears that his estranged family are going to be out of town, he takes Remigio back to his old house so he can collect some of his belongings and his dead mother's diamond ring. But when his family unexpectedly return, Ethan is forced to hold them hostage overnight, accidentally shooting his father (Raymond Ma) in the process. As the night progresses, Ethan is forced to confront his family and his own inner demons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finding Love In Strange & Unexcected Places 22 May 2006
Surprisingly enjoyable. A young gay man is thrown out by his father (with the help of his step-mom) and sells himself on the streets to get by. Eventually making a friendship that is pushed to the limits when a simple robbery of his home leads to the kidnapping of his family.

Although the two leads struggle with some of the clunking dialogue, they make their characters completely endearing throughout.

The family bickering, which continues during the kidnap, is spot on - funny, moving and strangely believable.

With all it's faults, this is an utterly charming film, clearly made with enthusiasm and a lot of passion.

Hat's off to everyone involved with this.

3.0 out of 5 stars My expectations were too high 14 Nov 2010
By Tommy Dooley TOP 50 REVIEWER

Whilst I agree with the other positive reviews I feel to give this film more than 3 stars belittles films especially 'gay' ones that are far superior (Summer Storm, Balls, Were the World mine etc). Whilst the story line is original, the son (Ethan Mao) gets outed by his fairy tale, sterotypically evil, step mother and his father throws him out leading to an accidental hostage situation, that is about it.

The acting veers from just above adequate to regional am dram. I agree with one of the reviewers that the script is partially to blame for this but a lot of 'blame' has to be laid at the door of Quentin Lee after all he wrote and directed the thing. Maybe there were issues around time or other commitments (I am just guessing) but I just got the feeling that everything was a tad too one dimensional and all the characters were contrived.

Whilst it is not a rubbish film if I were his teacher his report would say 'could do better', and do not think this is a bedroom gymnastic fest either - just in case you were wondering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ethan Mao (DVD) 9 Jan 2011
By Ward
Great acting despite a script which could have been better produced. However, the storyline is good and it is gripping and emotional in parts especially the dramatic end.
