Product Description

Enter into the world of the Duke of St. James in Victorian England, 1863. . . Lizzie Murdock has heard of this Duke, derisively known as merely 'St. James' in an ironic twist to the title he holds versus his lifestyle known to be anything but saintly. The fact that he is rich and once considered 'the catch of the decade' holds no attractions for her. When he offers her an astounding proposal, she is more offended than flattered and vows to rebuff his determined advances. Little does she know that their continued sparring over her future will lead to the revelation that he believes he won't be sharing in it for very long. "I simply believe there is a very good possibility that you shall become a widow at an extremely young age," he tells her. "Now doesn't that make the prospect of marrying me much more pleasant?" With those words, Lizzie is sucked into his world, a world where one would expect to find a self-centered man enjoying privilege and ease, but where instead she finds a man of uncommon character fighting for his life and prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for those he loves. With her involvement will come consequences that neither of them can foresee, and an arranged proposal meant to flush out evil produces much more until their very survival will depend upon their love for each other.

-- Terrible, intriguing, entwined events from years past rule Dante Larrimer, the Duke of St. James. He walks with the dead as he mingles with the meanest of society while seeking VENGEANCE.

Sara Elizabeth (Lizzie) Murdock, the daughter of a dysfunctional widowed squire, finds herself a pawn in the deadly game St. James plays to lure his enemies into the open. While "her serenity washes over him [St. James] like a healing balm...," she also disrupts his life mightily.

In the Brief, Eternal Silence is a spellbinding story full of manipulation and covert activities that affect the lives of many as St. James' twenty-three year search comes to fruition.

The secondary characters, so vital to the plot, are well developed and come alive with Mrs. Melvin's superb style of writing. From the ragtag messenger boy Steven, to the incomparable grandmother, these characters illicit an emotional response from the reader in diverse ways as they play their parts in this grand drama of vengeance.

In the Brief, Eternal Silence is excellent reading as the reader sees St. James come to realization that justice encompasses doing the right thing for everyone involved, not just a means by which to assuage one's own grief. As the plot unfolds, he finds he no longer needs Lizzie to reach his original goal, but "he wants her infinitely".

This is a happy-ever-after story to be read and enjoyed more than once - a good one for the library shelf. --The Long and Short of it Romance Reviews

-- The Duke of St. James is on a mission--to find the culprits who murdered his parents when he was but a boy of 10 years old. Along the way, he finds that the whole matter goes a lot deeper and contains more conspiracy than he could ever imagine--and might even involve the crown. Falling in love was the very last thing he wanted to do.

Miss Elizabeth Murdock is as plain as the day is long--and she likes it that way. She doesn't like attention and prefers to blend into the background. Then the Duke of St. James comes into her life and turns it upside down.

Love creeps up on both of them--but vengeance has to be dealt with first, as now it is not only the life of the Duke that is in danger, but Miss Murdock's as well.

How can the Duke end his vengeance and get the murderers before anyone else gets killed? Or will the murderers succeed before he and Miss Murdock can find true love? Have to read to find out. This book took me by surprise. It started out kind of slow but once it picked up I was definitely hooked. This wasn't the type of book I usually like to read but I have to say I enjoyed it immensely. This kept me reading to the end--

Oh dear! With a knowledgeable editor this book could have been o.k The writer raises this above the average Regency romp by a decent enough plot and characterisation,
But a Victorian Duke in a red velvet breeches suit? With a shirt with lace ruffles on the firmly attached cravat? A thieve's partner being his co-hort? I could go on, but found it difficult to continue with a book in which very single alley, mews, back-lane or urban pathway is referred to as a "mew". How singular! How wrong!
So plus points for knowing something about the opium wars, but several minus ones for such a cavalier approach to historical and geographical accuracy.

The premise of the story is pretty good - dark hero striving to avenge the death of his parents, heroine plain yet feisty, not putting up with the hero's rakishness. A heavier pen wielded by an editor with knowledge of 19th century England is in dire need here, let alone the countless spelling mistakes and typos that abound this piece. The author has clearly cobbled together a series of tropes within this canon, and has completely disregarded English culture, geography, and any historical accuracy pertaining to the era to which she writes. Not only that, but jarring Americanisms abound - from unlikely phrases uttered by the cast of characters to actions taken by the characters themselves, e.g. chewing tobacco and running horses on dirt tracks. Equally jarring is the names of the characters - Ryan is unlikely a name for an English aristocrat of the 19th century. Also- Chestershire? Clumsy. The author also needs to learn what a Mews is, that men don't wear velvet knee breeches or lace in the 1850s/60s, and that duelling was banned in the previous century! It's a shame that the details let down a reasonable plot, otherwise this could have been a nice enough piece of pulp fiction to while an afternoon away.

The book was really long. In that its value for money. One of the longest book I've read for this little money, I bought in through my kindle. Yes its true what the rest of the reviewers says about the author. It seems that Ms Melvin seem to have set the story in the 'Georgian Times' with Queen Victoria on the throne instead of the Prince Regent. I might be wrong about what the Victorians wore, but I am pretty sure by mid Victorian gentlemen of these times have rather short normal hair and not long and tie back in a queau. I am not keen how Ms Melvin writes in the 3rd person mode, which I think distracts the flow of the story. I wonder she does it thinking this will make the book more of a classic novel. But if this was the case then she shouldn't throw in the odd modern terms, eg. 'the Dowager Duchess buying off so and so...'. I don't think Charles Dickens ever used these words. There are positives in the story. It was an easy book to read and trying to see how it all was resolved was good. I guess if you do buy this book please do take into account the odd time period.
