If the stresses and strains of modern-day life are getting you down, then why not sit back and relax with a copy of Eternal Light, subtitled "Music of Inner Peace". After the glut of Gregorian chant CDs back in the 1990s, the monks have stepped aside to give the nuns--the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre and the Priory of the Resurrection, to be precise--a chance. The result is a 33-track CD with more than an hour of music reflecting the church calendar. The disc opens with the sound of the Priory Bell and goes on to explore music and chant from as far back as the seventh century right up to the present day. The texts are divided between Latin and English and include some familiar words, such as I Corinthians 13 ("The greatest of these is love") in Christopher Walker's "Faith, Hope and Love". Walker is also the composer of one of Eternal Light's standout tracks, the poignant "Into your hands, O Lord". The singing may not be of the standard of a fine church choir (tuning is sometimes wayward and the voices do not always blend well), but by being recorded in the chapel at New Hall, the disc has managed to preserve some of the spirit and atmosphere of the place where the Canonesses gather daily to worship. --Rebecca Agnew
