Born in Paris in 1943, Jaques Dutronc was a naturally talented musician, learning the piano and the violin whilst just a little lad, but he soon progressed! If you're from France you might think it bizarre that Jacques Dutronc is not that well known in the UK, in fact there has only ever been one album that has successfully brought together all of this marvellous man's output from the 1960's, and even more strangely it has only just recently been released. With Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi released on RPM in 2009, this figurehead of popular French culture finally gets his chance to shine in the Anglosphere.

Lets be honest, the chic filled glory of the 1960's French music scene is something really to behold by any music lover, its actually really difficult to find a dud album from the sixties amongst the multitude of singers and producers from across the English Channel, but with this compilation, any thoughts of Serge Gainsbourg or the yé-yé girls must surely take a back seat to the talents of Jacques Dutronc, a man who literally had it all in his musical arsenal.

This compilation begins with the title track, Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi was Dutronc's first big hit in France back in 1966, and it is easy to see why, a song which certainly swaggers and oozes marvellousness combining the best of Anglo Rhythm and Blues with a French twist. And to be fair, on looking through the sleeve notes, its easily noticeable that this man was at one point the coolest man alive, with a repertoire to match.

I concur with the above excellent review and cannot add much to it. Jacques Dutronc is a great musician, composing a truly wonderful and witty series of pop tunes from the sixties onwards. This compliation is a good taster of his early works. These tracks starting with Dutronc's signature tune Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi to me are amongst the best sixties pop music recorded not just in France, but anywhere.

I recently bought this CD from Amazon after seeing a clip of Jacques Dutronc on YouTube. I had an idea what to expect, but this CD not only met, but greatly surpassed all my expectations of it. Occasionally, one buys a CD that just totally blows you away, not only by being better than you thought it would be, but by also being just so incredible. This is one such release.
As is the way with most non-English-speaking artists, most of us have never heard of Jacques Dutronc, but don't let that put you off! If you like hip, club-style sound from the 60s, then you will love this, whether you speak French or not. Anyone who's ever been to any 60s nightclubs will already know quite a few of the songs on here; hearing "On Nous Cache Tous, On Nous Dit Rien" and "Le Responsable" again after so many years was very nostalgic for me, and further enhanced my opinion of it.
Around half of the songs on here (presented in chronological order) are definitely in the garage vein, although without the usual "my girl's no good"-style lyrics. If you do understand French, you would realise just how wierd some of these lyrics actually are (eg "There are cactuses all over the world, it's impossible to sit down"!), but this is not essential to appreciating the great tunes, which to me sound like what might have happened if The troggs met Bob Dylan.
The other half of the tracks are a mixture of various styles, from the tongue-in-cheek music-hall Kinks-ish of "Les Playboys", the out-and-out psychedelia of "La Metamorphoses" to the protest-style "Les Rois De Reform". Whatever mode he was in at the time, Jacques delivers top-quality stuff throughout this CD; there is not a bad tune amongst them.
I am now very interested to find out more about this obviously extremely talented guy. I would thoroughly recommend this CD to anyone interested in top-quality 60s sounds. On ne sera pas decu!

Bought this album having heard a track on a TV advert. Its is quite enjoyable but I won't find myself playing it too often - it is from a different time, long long ago.
