Depicting the life of a fallen woman and filmed with incredible accuracy and authenticity of Victorian culture this is a sad, moving touching and tremendously real story. Esther Waters (Kathleen Ryan) is a young woman living in 1880 s London. Forced by her abusive stepfather to start work, she leaves school to become a servant in an aristocratic country household. There she falls in love with the handsome footman, William Latch (Dirk Bogarde), who seduces and then abandons her. Pregnant and alone, she s forced to return to London. With nothing but her meagre savings and no prospects of employment she struggles to survive and keep her baby alive. This is a tale of the strength of the human spirit in the face of great adversity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A racing researcher's dream 29 Dec 2006
Format:VHS Tape
For me, the strength of this film is in the accuracy of the racing details, the costumes and the culture of the time. The racing scenes, shot on Epsom Downs recreate the Derby's of 1881 and 1885, and have been thoroughly researched, even the jockeys used for Fred Archer and Fred Webb show an amazing likeness. Also, the scenes in the streets, on the racecourse and in the public house are totally believable.

This is a film made by those who love and cherish the subject. Although to my knowledge, having worked at Racing Post for many years and, written the history of the Derby, very few people today know of the this film. Strangely, a few years ago, I awoke at 4 am, unable to sleep, to find the film just starting, and then, never saw it again, until succesfully pursuing a rare video copy.
This film has much to recommend it - a Victorian romance, the struggle of conscience, excitement and, a ripping gambling yarn.

Michael Church.

A rather flat and lifeless story which even the stars couldn't lift. I regret purchasing it. Don't expect too much!

4.0 out of 5 stars Esther Waters 30 Jan 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I found this a good historical no-nonsense film. Although Esther had hard times, I feel she fared better than many unmarried mothers of that time. An interesting look at the vagaries that befell the fallen woman and the fight for survival without the welfare state.
