It was once said of this work, 'Stealthy charmer'.
After several listens, I admit I have to agree.
After the maturity of 'Hoodoo', I was expecting more of the same, but was a little surprised on first hearing (aside from the tracks I was familiar with) to find a more in common with 'Solid Wood' than 'Footsteps'. If 'Hoodoo' was a trip stateside, then 'Essex' is a homecoming. With Ian Broudie producing, a different sound appears. An the lightning seed's influence is apparent in tracks such as 'So am I' and 'And I know'(in a 'Blue' genre). A much pared down version of 'Whispering your name' does more justice to Moyet's voice than the single remix (included here also). A long-favourite 'Dorothy', and 'Satellite' are stand-outs for me, along with 'Falling'.
I wasn't sure at first, but a stealthy charmer indeed.
