Based on a genre approach to literature, Essentials of Young Adult Literature offers students and instructors a well-organized, clearly-written overview of young adult literature.  The text includes extensive recommended book lists organized by genre and topic and annotated for ease of selection. ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Carl M. Tomlinson taught graduate and undergraduate courses in children’s literature and language arts at Northern Illinois University. As an elementary school teacher, he packed his classroom with good children’s books and read aloud to his students every day. His research interests are literature-based reading and international children’s literature. In addition to Essentials of Young Adult Literature, he has co-authored Essentials of Children’s Literature (Allyn and Bacon) and is the editor of Children’s Books from Other Countries (Scarecrow/USBBY).

Carol Lynch-Brown taught graduate and undergraduate courses in children’s and young adult literature, reading, and language arts education at Florida State University.  She was a teacher in elementary school, grades 1, 2, and 4, and in middle school, grades 6 to 8, in St. Paul and Minneapolis Public Schools. She also taught English to young adults in French public schools. Literature was the foundation of her instruction in all these classroom situations. She is currently raising a teenaged grandson and seeing, once again, the benefits of literature in a young person’s life.

Super resource for teachers & parents of upper elementary through high school students 16 Feb 2008
By Mindelei Wuori - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am a pre-service Secondary Education Major (English & History) and have been using this book for a class focusing upon Young Adult Literature. The lists themselves are reason enough to pickup this book! It is the perfect reference for someone who is new to or even well versed in young adult literature. This text also provides several sources for finding award winning literature for students of all reading levels. You will not be sorry for investing in such an excellent source!

Clear and to the point 29 May 2010

Essentials of YA Literature has fulfilled my expectations: to get a concise yet thorough panorama on the fiel of YA lit. Useful for teachers and students of Children's Lit, it affords up-to-date information as well as suitable ways of categorizing the different kinds of books offered to this varied range of audience.

This is a good reference book for school librarians and English teachers of grades 7-12. It gives concise points about using various kinds of literature with students, but even more valuable are the reference lists of books that have recently been published for young adults. I was disappointed that there were no pictures or graphics - since the price seemed high, I assumed it would be illustrated.
