Mary Townsend has written a superb book to introduce the reader into the basics of mental health nursing. Although a vast topic the author has given a brief outline into several areas of psychiatric nursing including eating disorders, personality disorders, substance related disorders and numerous others besides.Although not too in depth it gives the reader the opportunity to discover an insight for development in further reading around the subject area. Not only has Mary covered specific illnesses related to mental health but other areas including the child and adolescent, victims of abuse and ethical & legal issues. The layout is well presented and quite easy to pick up and read. As an introductory book it clearly and simply explains terminology and keeps jargon to a minimum. A must for all nursing students and qualified nurses alike who come into contact with patients, not all who are there to be treated with a mental health related issue.
